What's the best song you have heard today?

the search brought me to this:
Dan Vasc - Amazing Grace (also in ‘vhtv-participants…in songs’ but different)

and that it is not alone:
Barry Sadler - Ballad of the Green Berets

Today I’d like to pay tribute to the American singer, songwriter, pianist, satirist and mathematician (!) Tom Lehrer, who passed away two days ago at the age of 97. His active music career lasted from 1953, when he relesed his debut album to 1972 when he had his last concert appearance for decades.

Although this is a time span of almost 20 years, his career was relatively brief. He only released five albums, and according to himself he held 109 concerts and wrote 37 songs (although these numbers may be up for debate). Still this was enough to secure him a cult following in the decades to come, and he is still not totally forgotten.

Tom Lehrer was a Harvard graduate, and perhaps this is were his real interest was. By the early 1970’s he had become a teacher in mathematics and musical theatre, a job he held for the rest of his working life. Still, he did not abandon music completely. He kept writing music for TV shows and plays, and made a few rare appearances in concert and on TV.

Songwriters known for satirical lyrics has cited Tom Leherer as an inspiration, among them Donald Fagan (Steely Dan) and Randy Newman. So I think this man deserves a mention and a short tribute now that he has left this world. So here’s what may be his best known song. To the memory of Tom Lehrer :wine_glass:

Tom Lehrer - We Will All Go Together When We Go (live in Oslo 1967)

In 1945 Tom Lehrer wrote a song called Fight Fiercly Harvard. The song is about a football game, but its title has unfortunately become relevant in in the US today.

Tom Lehrer - Fight Fiercely Harvard (recorded in 1953, I think)

Happy Brirthday to the English guitarist and singer Ted Turner, who is turning 75 today. Known from Wishbone Ash, a band who had considerable success in the UK in the first part of the 1970’s and some beyond. Four of their first five albums made the top 20 in the UK album charts, the highest being Argus (1972) peaking at number 3.

Ted Turner has also done some session work, most notebly playing acoustic guitar on two tracks on John Lennon’s Imagine album. He’s also been recording with George Harrison, Al Stewart and Cilla Black.

In 1974 Ted Turner quit Wishbone Ash, due to fatigue from constant touring. Since then he’s been active in various projects and released three albums, two of them with his wife. Also he’s had several reunions with Wishbone Ash, a band that is still going today.

So let’s celebrate Ted Turner’s birrthday with him singing and playng guitar on Jail Bait :wine_glass:

Can’t get this song out of my head right now. Listened to it like… A LOT… the last couple of days as I used it in a sexy video featuring Rollie that I’ve been working on. Extended the intro a bit for my video, which can be found in the Agnes & Neo topic. I’m quite satisfied with how that video turned out, if you don’t mind a little bit of shameless self promotion.

Today I’d once again like to give a mention to yet another forgotten musician. One of those most of you have never heard of, but most probably have heard. Today it’s 85 years since Larry Knechtel (1940-2009) was born. He was a well sesoned session musician in LA from the 1960’s and well into his later years.

Larry Knechtel played several instrument, mostly piano, bass and harmonica. He has recorded with Elvis Presley, the Byrds, the Doors, the Beach Boys the Mama’s & the Papa’s and Nancy Sinatra, among many others. In the first part of the 1970’s he was a member of Bread, a band who had considerable success around that time.

Larry Knechtel’s best known work is without doubt his piano on Bridge Over Troubled Water, for which he won a Grammy in 1970. So I figure this Simon & Garfunkel song is a fitting tribute to the memory of a musician who mastered his craft. To Larry Knechtel :wine_glass:

I’d like to pay tribute to the English singer and songwriter Terry Reid. Today it was announced that he passed away recently at the age of 75. He was a very good singer, who had some success in the latter part of the 1960’s and into the 70’s. Still he never really made it. Instead he is best remembered as the singer who could have made it big, but who missed one opportunity after the other.

As the story goes, when The Yardbirds were beginning to fall apart in 1968, their guitarist Jimmy Page was thinking about forming a New Yardbirds and he wanted Terry Reid as the singer. However, Terry had other commitments and said no. Instead he suggested a young singer he’d recently seen and been very impressed with. The singer was Robert Plant and he got the job, the new band ended up calling themselves Led Zeppelin and the rest is history. To top it off, not long after this, Deep Purple’s original singer Rod Evans left the band, and Ritchie Blackmore offered Terry Reid the job. Once again Terry said no, the job went to Ian Gillian and once again the rest is history.

Now Terry Reid had a fine voice and was also a pretty decent songwriter, so it’s a shame the above is what most remember him by. Still, neither his solo career did really get anywhere but some minor success. So there may be reasons to why he is remembered as the singer “who almost made it”. On the other hand, Terry Reid was highly respected among his fellow musicians, and at least he was able to keep a music career going more or less up until his death. In fact he had concerts scheduled earlier this year, which he unfortunately had to cancel due to his health. I think he deserves a mention in our music topic.

So here’s to Terry Reid’s memory. Thank you for the music, may you be remembered :wine_glass:

Happy Birthday to the American singer and songwriter Rodney Crowell, who is turning 75 today. His an excellent songwwriter, who’s had a long and solid career in country, folk and Americana. It all started when he arrived in Nashville in 1972 and it hasn’t ended yet. He has several concerts scheduled for the rest of 2025 and new album coming out at the end of August.

Rodney Crowell has gotten to number 1 in the US country charts five times, and he’s gotten two Grammy awards. In addition, his songs have been recorded by artists such as Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Rosanne Cash and Bob Seger. Some of these covers have done pretty well. It’s also worth noting that from 1975 to 78 he was a member of Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band.

In 2017 Rodnet Crowell recorded a song about how it all started. Nashville 1972 is a fine song and listening to it is an excellent way to celebrate his birthday. So once again, Happy Birthday Rodney Crowell :wine_glass:

Today it’s 100 years since the American songwriter Felice Bryant (1925-2003) was born. Together with her husband Boudleaux Bryant (1920-1987) she wrote several songs that have become staples in the pop music canon. Their songs have been recorded by numerous artists, among others the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Jim Reeves, Bob Dylan Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Nazareth and so on.

So to Felice & Boudleaux Bryant’s memory, here’s a great well known song written by them :wine_glass:

The Everly Brothers - Wake Up Little Susie

In 1980 Felice & Boudleaux Bryant did release and album of their own, called A Touch of Bryant. Their version of one of my all time favourite songs are on it. It’s not quite up there with the Every Brothers. Still it’s a pretty decent version, so I might as well include it here.
