Heard some kids talk about a “cool song” and it was the remake of this one, that I love lots more than the remake.

listening to the two above reminded me of an old one from Donna Summer, probably not the best known, but for that time going well into my ears.

And although it may not be everybody’s taste of music, it was what we danced to in my youth.

Of course the European version, because it has more “drive” than the american one.

Aqualung - Jethro Tull

And it seems they will never die. Ian Anderson with the current setting of Jethro Tull is playing some 20 miles away from me tomorrow. Wonder if I take another opportunity to see them like a couple times before.

From a band, that I saw in the early 80ies with Alvin Lee and Coming home, an old title (1971) in a 2017 remastered version

Nazareth - This Flight Tonight

Love the video, must be like old @Lazurus_aka_Virgil flying after a bottle of JD. :joy:

I don’t know whether you noticed it. It plays great old rock/pop songs after Nazareth automatically (CCR, Zeppelin, Sweet, …). So this flight tonight becomes a long one.

I’d like to pay tribute to yet another musician who has left us. The American keyboardist, singer and songwriter Bobby Whitlock passed away yesterday at the age of 77. He is best known as one of the founders of Derek & the Dominos. This band released only one studio album, “Layla (And Other Assorted Love Songs)”. Still when the album’s title track is often considered one of the best songs in rock history, one album was enough to secure the band a big name in the canon of rock.

However, there is plenty other good songs on Derek & the Dominos’ album than the title track, and Bobby Whitlock co-wrote several of them. After Derek & the Dominos’ brief career, he pursued a solo career for the rest of the 1970’s. Then for most of the 80’s and 90’s he withdrew to his farm to focus on his family, doing some occasional studio work now and then. In 1999 he resumed to his solo career, often together with his wife CoCo Carmel, who is also a musician.

In addition, Bobby Whitlock has also guested on several albums. Worth mentioning here is George Harrison (All Things Must Pass), Eric Clapton and Stephen Stills’ Manassas. And even though he’s not credited, he allegedly played on the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street too. Bobby Whitlock’s solo career never really took off, but at lest he was able to keep a low-key career going for decades. We lost a fine musician yesterday, who I think deserves a mention here. Thank you for the music Bobby, may you be remembered :beer_mug:

Bobby Whitlock - You Sold Me Down the River (2009)

On the Derek & the Dominos album Bobby Whitlock wrote one song alone, which he also sang. It is a beuatiful song, so to celebrate his memory I might as well include it here.

Somewhere in my neighborhood a formation of bagpipes and drums has been playing for about an hour now. It’s kind of surreal. I live in a mid-small town in Germany…

Happy Birthday to the Northern Irish singer Fergal Sharkey, who is turning 67 today. He may well be the finest singer from the punk/new wave scene in the late 1970’s and into the 80’s. He started out with The Undertones, a band who had some success at the time. The band’s debut single Teenage Kicks, with its simple and catchy melody, has become a staple in the punk/pop canon. The song is a classic, well worth revisiting any day.

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks

Due to pressure from the record company and internal strife, The Undertones broke up in 1983. Fergal Sharkey pursued a solo career, and with it came bigger success. His best known song A Good Heart (1985) charted in the top 5 in several countries, the highest being number 1 in the UK, Ireland, Belgium and Australia. The song sounds very 1980’s, but it’s got a good melody and the singing is superb. So it’s also worth revisiting.

Fergal Sharkey - A Good Heart

In 1991 Fergal Sharkey withdrew from performing, stating that it was time to leave the stage to younger musicians. Since then he has worked behind the scene in the music industry, releasing no records and making only one appearance on stage. He is a very fine singer, who I would have liked to hear more from. Still, all we can do is respect Fergal Sharkey’s choice and say Happy Birthday to him :wine_glass:
