…how many steps does the guard take during their walk across the tomb of the Unknowns, and why?

21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

…how long do they hesitate after their about face to begin their return walk, and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1.

More about the tomb of the Unknowns.
(The last paragraphs are amazing.)

  1. Why are their gloves wet?

Their gloves are moistened to prevent losing their grip on the rifle.

  1. Do they carry their rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not?

They carry the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb.

After their march across the path, they execute an about face and move the rifle to the outside shoulder.

  1. How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

  1. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, they must be between 5’ 10" and 6’ 2" tall and their waist size cannot exceed 30". Other requirements of the Guard:

They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot _____ any a_____l on or off duty.

They cannot swear in public and cannot d______e the uniform or the tomb in any way.

After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only a little over 600 presently worn.

The guard must obey these rules while serving as guards or for the rest of their lives, if they choose.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.

There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform.

Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror.

The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV.

All off-duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred.

Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis (the boxer) and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, (the most decorated soldier of WWII) of Hollywood fame.

Every guard spends five hours a day getting their uniforms ready for guard duty.

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

In 2003, as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington, DC, our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm.

On the ABC evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.

They respectfully declined the offer, ‘No way, Sir!’ Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson.

The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.

God Bless and Keep Them

Wow. They take this things a bit too serious. I mean remembering is good and we have such tombs here too in Germany but this is so much over the top… No words for that…
And why bring always in a fictional entity nobody has been ever able to prove it does exist?

well no matter what others think . i actually am proud of the way the americans remember the the lost soldiers whos remains where never found or identified . the main tomb holds the remains of an unknown soldier from world war 1 to signify all the other American soldiers who didnt make it home and the 2 cripts in front hold the remains of an unknown soldier from each of the WW2 and the Korean war ,i am a true englishman who lost 4 uncles in world war 2 whom i never got to meet nor was ever able to visit there graves as there bodies where never found they all died on the same day on the normandy invasions , the only monument for them is sat in a burial ground in normandy and its just one stone for all four of my uncles , So i will say again , what america does for the lost soldiers with no identity is bueatyfull and solemn . and anybody who thinks otherwise is either clueless or heartless

We in England have a proud record and tradition of rememberance in many ways.
The most typical one now is the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
Many others all over the country especially in London.
It’s good to remember those who gave their lives so we could have a decent peacefull life.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
