I would agree with Albion’s post below (or above, depending upon how this one appears) and suggest as he did, that they are Chipmunks.

I’m not so sure, these guys are active at night (nocturnal) chipmunks are active through the day (diurnal)

Yes I know about ‘nocturnal’ and ‘diurnal’, as I am an owl enthusiast (well actually a bird watcher in general) so I am familiar with those 2 terms.

Could be Dormice. Tree dwelling, cope with colder climates, have tails like squirrels etc. These critters seem to behave like squirrels from what I observed. very good at leaping.

well over in that part of the world they have actual broad forests. which of course we no longer have. Ergo, our dormice are endangered. Anyhoo, i was only suggesting based on a twenty second web search.
