What's the best song you have heard today?

Thank you for acknowledging this AND for not making any comments on the current rather negative ‘twist’ the media seem to want (unnecessarily in my view) to focus on, relating to this whole story.

Ok, I’m actually not aware of this recent “twist”. And I certainly can’t understand what is negative about this. The song was done for charity, and as far as I’ve understood, 100% of the profits went to research.

I won’t go into any details here as it is not appropriate for this topic but things didn’t turn out quite as simple as some might have liked.

Press coverage, when there is any - over here in England anyway - seems to go on about that now, rather than the man’s achievements .

Had to do some Google, and I think I get some of what you mean. Seems there’s been some economical misconduct here by the family. Sadly this sometimes happens with charity foundations.

Still Captain Tom did what he did, and nothing can change that!

Bobby Keys - Steal From A King (1972)

Since we got in a Stones mood today, with Keith turning 81, let us also celebrate the memory of American saxophonist Bobby Keys (1943-2014). He played sax on lots of Stones albums, and was a long time touring member of the band. He would also have turned 81 today, To his memory, here’s a song from his only solo album :wine_glass:

Here’s to the memory of guitarist and singer Alvin Lee, who would have turned 80 today. He is best known as singer and gutar player in the English band Ten Years After, who had quite a bit of success from 1969 to the mid-70’s. After the band split, Alvin Lee went solo, releasing 16 solo albums, up until he passed away in 2013.

Alvin Lee is one of the greatest “forgotten” guitarists in the history of rock. I think I found a good track to show just that. On The Bluest Blues Alvin’s got a guest. The slide guitar beginning around 2:15 is none other than George Harrison. So what’s better to celebrate the memory of Alvin Lee (and George Harrison) than a guitar extravaganza like this. Let there be guitar :guitar: :tumbler_glass:

Alvin Lee, with George Harrison - The Bluest Blues (1993)

If Woodstock hadn’t been an outdoor festival, Ten Years After’s legendary performance there would have raised the roof. Perhaps it did anyway :face_exhaling: :guitar:

Happy Birthday to Jorma Kaukonen, who is turning 84 today! He’s best known as the lead guitarist and occasional singer in Jefferson Airplane, one of the greatest bands from the hippie era. During his time in Airplane, he started the side project Hot Tuna, together with Airplane’s bass player Jack Casady.

During the first part of the 1970’s Airplane began to fall apart, and Hot Tuna became Jorma’s main project. Except for some breaks, Hot Tuna has been going more or less up until today. In addition, Jorma’s released several solo albums. To celebrate his birthday, here he is singing, with Jefferson Airplane in their prime. I raise my glass to a man who’s been around in the music world for almost 60 years now. Happy Birthday to Jorma Kaukonen :tumbler_glass:

Here’s one to the memory of one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll. The English singer Frederick Albert Heath, better known as Johnny Kidd, was born 89 years ago today. Along with his band The Pirates, he had quite some success in the UK from the late 1950’s to the mid-60’s. Sadly his life was cut short in a car accident in 1966. To Johnny Kidd’s memory :tumbler_glass:

Johhny Kidd & The Pirates - Please Don’t Touch (1959)

Before I stop, just a little music history trivia. Johnny Kidd was a passenger in the car accident when he died. Another passenger was a certain Nick Simper, who luckily survived the accident, and went on to become the bass player in Deep Purple Mk. 1.

Happy Birthday to the English singer Jacqui McShee, who is turning 81 today. She is known as the singer in Pentangle, one of the biggest bands on the English folk-rock scene in the 1960’s and 70’s. The band even had some success in the charts, with the album Basket of Light peaking at number 5 in the UK charts in 1969.

Pentangle broke up in 1973, but got back together again in 1981. Since then the band has been going up until more or less today, although with Jacqui as the only constant member. To celebrate her birthday, Here is the song Light Flight from the beforementioned album Basket of Light. What a good a good singer she is. Happy Birthday to Jacqui McShee :wine_glass:

Pentangle - Light Flight (1971)

I made this post when Jacqui’s husband, drummer Gerry Conway, passed away earlier this year.
