What's the best song you have heard today?

Ozzy Osbourne - Mr. Crowley

Three days ago I mentioned the American guitarist Randy Rhoads (1956-1982). He is basically only known as the guitarist on Ozzy’s first two solo albums, which was enough for him to put his name into the history of rock. Today Randy Rhoads would have turned 68. Here’s one to his memory :wine_glass:

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Since Ozzy’s birthday earlier this week, I’ve had some Sabbath popping up in my YouTube rcommendations. Among them is the first track on their debut album from 1970. Got me thinking, is there any band/artist introducing themselves to the world in a more proper and accurate manner than this?

Happy Birthday to the American singer and songwriter Tom Waits, who is turning 75 today. He made his debut in 1973, with good songs inspired by beat poetry, jazz, blues and country. As the albums kept coming, the arrangments got weirder and weirder, which has made him an artist who may not be for everybody. In addition he’s got a growling and very distinct voice.

However, Tom Waits is a highly respected artist, both among his fellow musicians and among his ever growing fanbase. Numerous musicians have expressed admiration for him, and his songs have been recorded by among others The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash and The Ramones.

In the past 25 years Tom Waits’ albums have even begun to chart, getting into the top five in the album charts in several countries, even to number 1 twice in Norway. His music may sound weird, but the core of it is still beat poetry, jazz, blues and country, and last but not least some very skilled songwriting To celebrate Tom Waits’ birthday, I’ll go easy and pick a couple of his more standard and “easy-listening” songs. Cheers to Tom Waits!

Tom Waits - Hold On

Tom Waits - Downtown Train

I have seen Tom Waits live once. It was on the Rain Dogs tour in 1985. He is an excellent performer, and it was a memorable experience! And while we’re at it, here is an example of a little more challenging side of today’s birthday boy.

Did you post the right song now mate? You posted the same song half an hour ago.

When celebrating the memory of Frank Zappa earlier this week, we also discussed the famous fire in Montreux in Switxerland in 1971, and the song it inspired. It is a good song, and it is sometimes said about really good songs, that they can be played in stripped down arrangements and still be good songs, It got me thinking about a version of Smoke On the Water I passed by recently, by a young lady who calls herself Gamazda. I’d say it works :musical_keyboard:

Scooter - Posse heard it today and took me back some years.

Compact Disk Dummies - The Reeling

Something from the past I loved hearing, but hated watching. The sadness of the clip somehow is a masterpiece though

Happy Birthday to the American singer Brenda Lee, who is turning 80 today. She made her debut in 1956, and then hit number 1 in the US charts two years later with Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, her first of several hits to come. Since we’re two weeks shy of Christmas, this may be a well suited song to celebrate our birthday girl with. I raise my glass to Brenda Lee. Happy Birthday! :champagne:

Brenda Lee - Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (1958)

Might as well delve into some music history, since Brenda Lee is the topic here. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree was released as a single again in due time for Christmas in 2023, once again hitting number 1 in the charts, and making Brenda Lee, 78 then, the oldest artist ever to top the Billboard chart in the US. One week later she broke her own record. The song was still number one, and Brenda had turned 79.

To end with more trivia, the record broken by Brenda was held by Louis Armstrong for almost 60 years. He got to number 1 with Hello Dolly in 1964, when he was 62 years old.

Hence my post right above this! Brenda Lee may be the oldest person to top the US charts. However. the oldest person to top the charts in the world is Tom Moore. When You Never Walk Alone got to number one in the UK charts in April 2020, he was 99 years old, six days short of turning 100!

Captain Tom Moore was a war veteran, who during the Covid lockdown started to take walks in his garden and post it on YouTube, with the intent to raise money for research into Covid. This became a huge success, and sparked the idea to make a record. Since the whole thing started with Tom’s daily stroll, what could be a more appropriate song than You Never Walk Alone. Respect!

Tom Moore passed away in February 2021.
Don’t be afraid of the dark.
