It’s A Beautiful Day - White Bird
I want to pay tribute to David LaFlamme, singer and violintist in the American band It’s A Beautiful Day. I just found that he passed away Monday this week at the age of 82. Thank you for the music David, may you be remembered.
Now this gives me an opportunity to plug one of the greatest debut albums ever, It’s A Beautiful Day’s self titled album from 1969. The album is a little forgotten today, which is a shame, since it is a true classic, deserving all the attention it can get
Side one is, with one excepton, full of melodic and beautiful songs, with David’s violin being prominent all the way. On side two however, the band leaves the comfort zone of mellow and melodic San Fransisco psychedelia for a more adventurous and experimental sound. An example of that may be the opening track Bombay Calling.
If anyone finds the opening chords familiar you are correct. Jon Lord has openly admitted that he “borrowed” them for C___d In Time. Well, It’s A Beautiful Day “borrowed” a riff back from Deep Purple for the opening track of their second album, so everything worked out well for both parts.
Yet another long rant from me today, I hope you’ll bear with me, I tend to take off a little when it comes to my personal musical favourites. It’s A Beautiful Day released three pretty decent studio albums after this, none of them as good the debut. If you are not familiar with it and find the songs posted above interesting, I urge you to go check the album out.
