Happy Birthday to Nicky “Topper” Headon, who is turning 68 today. He was the drummer in the classic The Clash lineup, and is probably the best drummer to come out of the punk/new wave scene in England in the late 1970’s. To celebrate Topper’s birthday, here is The Clash with Tommy Gun..
Happy Birthday to Ron Wood, who is turning 76 today. He is of course first and foremost known as one of the guitar players in The Rolling Stones for almost 50 years now, but should also be remembered for playing guitar in The Faces and bass (!) in the Jeff Beck Group (well, they had another guitarist in that band). To celebrate Ron Wood’s birthday, I’ve chosen a song from one of his 1970’s solo albums. Here’s Ron Wood with Seven Days.
The backing band seems familiar. Is it The Ron Woods?
Happy Birthday to Ian Hunter, who is turning 84 today. Known as the singer, piano and guitar player in English band Mott the Hoople, and for a long solo career after he split with them. I have seen him live once in the late 1980’s, with Mick Ronson on lead guitar. For my birthday tribute to Ian Hunter, I choose the first song from his first solo LP, Once Bitten Twice Shy. Here is Ian Hunter, with Mick Ronson on guitar.
Happy Birthday to Suzi Quatro, who is turning 73 today. This American singer and bass player broke through in England in 1973, and had several hits during the 1970’s. Here is Suzi Quatro from 1973, with her first single Can the Can.
This is around the time where it all started for me. So these are good memories.
The very first concert I went to as a teenager was on October 10th, 1974 in Hamburg and it was Suzi Quatro.
Wow! Now we are talking good memories
Let us celebrate the memory of Curtis Mayfield, who would have turned 81 today, if he hadn’t passed away in 1999, at the age of 57. This American singer, guitarist and songwriter is one of the greatest in soul music, starting with The Impressions in the late 1950’s, then having a long solo career after he left the group in 1970. In Curtis Mayfild’s memory, here is one of his best known songs, Move On Up.
George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Bad To the Bone
With guest appearance by Bo Diddley, who would have turned 95 yesterrday.
Happy Birthday to Michelle Phillips, who is turning 79 today. She was one of the singers in American vocal group The Mamas & The Papas. They had some big hits in the latter part of the 1960’s, like California Dreaming and Monday Monday, which you can find somewhe else in this topic. Michelle Phillips is the only one still alive, and as a birthday tribute to her, here’s The Mamas & The Papas with Somebody Groovy, taken from the Montery festival in 1967.
great voice, beautifull woman!
The Mamas & The Papas - Go Where You Wanna Go
Sorry, but I got on a roll again. Here’s another one for Michelle Phillips. Damn, The Mamas & The Papas had some great songs.
I’d like to pay tribute to yet another of the unsung musicians in the history of rock music. American drummer Dickie Harrell passed away Wednesday last week, at the age of 82. He was the drummer with The Blue Caps, Gene Vincent’s backing band. Artists and bands like these were the pioneers, without whom the vast majority of this forum topic would not have existed. In the honour of Dickie Harrell’s memory, here is Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps with Be-Bop-A-Lula.
Funny story at the end. It’s been said that the screams Dickie Harrell makes during the song, he made to make sure his m____r heard that he was on the record
sorry, but…
Ok, sorry to hear, this song is a classic, Probably some copyright issue. I assume Demon Music is the company who owns the rights for this video. Although this kind of music was by some called demon music back in those days.
I found the song on Youtube. Unfortunately only audio, but if there are more people here who can’t access it, I’ll post it.
One of the true greats. Sometimes a little forgotten these days, but as I said…
Ian Dury - Sweet Gene Vincent
Since we had Gene Vincent mentioned a little earlier, here is a great tribute to the man, taken from Ian Dury’s classic solo debut album New Boots And Panties.
Some trivia at the end, the boy on the cover is Ian Dury’s son Baxter, who like his f____r became a recording artist, and has released eight albums since 2002.
Chuck Berry with his greatest success: Johnny B. Goode
Live At The Toronto Peace Festival 1969
