Queens of the Stone Age- “Carnavoyeur”

Happy Birthday to English singer and guitarist Noddy Holder, who is turning 77 today. He is known as the frontman and co-songwriter in Slade, one of the greatest bands from the glam rock era in the 1970’s. Probably best known for their hard rocking tunes, Slade also had some good melodic songs. To celebrate Noddy’s birthday, here is one of those songs, Far Far Away by Slade.

While we’re at it, Jimmy Lea, Slade’s bass player and other co-songwriter, turned 74 yesterday. So this one’s for him too.

Let us celebrate the memory of Scottish singer and songwriter Jackie Leven, who would have turned 73 today, if he hadn’t passed away in 2011 at the age of 61.He had a long and productive solo career from the mid 1990’s up until his death, He was even scheduled for a concert four days after he died. I had the pleasure of seeing him live once sometime in the late 90’s. To me he is a very underappreciated artist, which is the reason for the rather long piece I write here. I want to draw attention to and recommend him to anyone not familiar with him. His music can be described as melodic, epic and poetic rock, often inspired by Scottish folk music. Before his solo career, he gained some recognition in the late 70’s and early 80’s as the singer in the band Doll By Doll. To celebrate Jackie Leven’s memory I have chosen a song by them. So here is Doll By Doll with Main Travelled Roads.

Let us once again celebrate the memory of another artist we lost way to early. Engliish singer and songwriter Nick Drake would have turned 75 today, if he hadn’t passed away in 1974 at the age of 26. Nick Drake had his personal problems, and he left us with only three albums, all of them excellent in their own way. Sadly for him the appreciation of his music came after his death, and has grown ever since then. Today he is a highly praised artist, although his music, being rather slow and melancholic, may not be for anyone. To celebrate Nick Drake’s memory, here.s one of his more “upbeat” songs, Northern Sky.
