For obvious reasons I’ve been listening some more than usual to Dolly Parton the past few days. So here is a couple of clips of her together with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. The first one shows that Dolly was a pretty good guitar player too.

Time for another song run-down, mixed with some rock history and trivia. Today’s song is Wild One, written by the Australian’s Johnny Greenan, Johnny O’Keefe and Dave Owens. The song is also known as Real Wild Child, and has become a standard in rock music. It has been recorded by among others Joan Jett, Jerry Lee Lewis, Brian Setzer (Stray Cats), Albert Lee and Jet Harris (The Shadows), and of course the ones below.
In 2003 Status Quo released the album Riffs, an album consisting of covers of old rock standards, among them Wild One, and re-recordings of old Quo classics.

The songs biggest commercial success came in 1986, when Iggy Pop recorded it for his “comeback” album Blah! Blah! Blah!. It made the top 30 in six countries, the highest being in New Zeeland, where the single got to number 1. It also peaked at number 10 in the UK.

Let us jump back all the way to 1958, when the song was recorded by one of its writers, namely Johnny O’Keefe. Even though he is credited, it is disputed if he had anything at all to do with the writing of the song. Still, it was he who sang it, and his is a name worth stopping by a little. He was a pioneer in Australian rock ‘n’ roll, the first local rocker to chart in Australia and the first Australian rocker to tour the US. He was big in Australia, something like the country’s own Elvis.
Johnny O’Keefe - Wild One
So we’re down to the original then? Well, actually we’re not. The first recording of the song were done by Jerry Allison, drummer in Buddy Holly’s band The Crickets. He heard Johnny O’Keefe perform the song when he was on a brief tour in Australia in early 1958 with Buddy Holly, and recorded it using the pseudonym Ivan, when they got back to the US. Buddy Holly played guitar on the track, which made the lower ends of the top 100 in the US.

As it often is with me, there’s a little more behind this post. This a little more being that Jerry Allison was born 87 years ago today. He was one of the pioneers in rock ‘n’ roll, and he could have had a much bigger career if Buddy Holly hadn’t died in the plane crash in 1959.
Still, The Crickets continued after Holly’s death, and had a pretty decent career on the rock revival circuit. The band collaborated with artists like Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Waylon Jennings and Nanci Griffiths. The Crickets played their last concert in 2016. Jerry Allison was the only constant member of the band through all these years.
Jerry Allison is also the co-writer of That’ll Be the Day and Peggy Sue, two of Buddy Holly’s biggest hits. Peggy Sue was originally to be called Cindy Lou, but Jerry was dating a girl named Peggy Sue at the time, so he insisted to change the name of the song. Peggy Sue Gerron later became Jerry’s first wife.
Jerry Allison passed away in 2022 at the age of 82. Let this post be to his memory

The Bee Gees - To Love Somebody (live on TV 1967)
Happy Birthday to Barry Gibbs, who is turning 80 today! The oldest and yet the only surviving member of the three brothers that was the Bee Gees. Here he is singing a song from the early part of the band’s career, still one of their best known songs. It’s writtne by himself and brother Robin. Happy Birthday to Barry Gibb

Here’s to the memory of the American keyboardist, singer and songwriter Billy Preston (1946-2006), who was born 80 years ago today. Today he is probably best remembered for his work with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
For a while Billy Preston was considered the fifth Beatle. He contributed heavily on the Let It Be sessions, and played organ on two tracks on Abbey Road. It is even said that Lennon suggested him as a member of the band. And Billy Preston was close, the well known Beatles song Get Back was actually credited to The Beatles, with Billy Preston.

Billy Preston also has quite the history with The Rolling Stones. He played on all of the band’s five albums between 1971 and 76, and was the primary keyboard player in the Stones touring band from 1973 until 77. He also appeared on two later Stones albums.

So it is sometimes a little forgotten that Billy Preston had a sucessful career on his own. He relesed over 25 studio albums and dozens of singles, two of them getting to the top of the US charts. He’s also done session work for among others Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston and several solo albums by ex-Beatles members. I’ll end this post with one of his number 1 singles.
