Happy Birthday to Don Brewer, who is turning 78 today. He’s best known as the drummer and occasional singer in the American band Grand Funk Railroad. This band didn’t really make much impact in Europe, but for a while they were huge in the US! In the first half of the 1970’s Grand Funk sold millions of records over there. Nine of their singles made the top 30 in the US charts, two at number 1. After the band split in 1977, there has been a few reunions through the years.
Since the mid 1980’s Don Brewer has also been the drummer in Bob Seger’s touring band on several occasions, the last time in 2015. Still, he is best remember from Grand Funk. And he was the singer on the band’s best known song, their first number 1 and a staple in the classic rock canon. Happy Birthday to Don Brewer

Happy Birthday to the English drummer Martin Chambers, who is turning 75 today. Known to the rock world as the drummer in The Pretenders from 1978 until 1986 and then again from 1993 until 2023. Here’s a toast to yet another one in the background who sometimes tends to be a little forgotten. The toast comes with one of my favourite Pretenders songs

Freddie Mercury was born 80 years ago today. As he was the singer and frontman in one of the biggest band’s ever, I don’t think any further introduction is necessary. Personally I’ve never been a big fan of Queen. Still, with all due respect, they are great musicians, and Freddie Mercury was a fantastic showman! And I do like some of their songs.
So I’ll gladly celebrate memory of Freddie Mercury with one of these songs. This is the last single Queen released before his death in 1991. It came out just a little over five weeks before he passed away on the 24th of November in 1991. He was 45 years old. To the memory of Freddie Mercury

Happy Birthday to the English guitarist Clem Clempson, who is turning 77 today. He has appeared as guest musician with among others Bob Dylan, Roger Daltrey, Roger Waters, Jack Bruce and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
However, Clem Clempson is arguably best known as guitarist in Humble Pie and Colloseum. Here’s a great track by Humble Pie to celebrate his birthday

All in all… the world of music is changing. With AI, even a musical dud like me could make music. Whether that would be a good thing… I don’t know. For me, music isn’t just about the melody and genre, but also the lyrics—and that is something I can do (though I’m out of practice).
As long as it’s clearly understood that these aren’t real singers or musicians, I think it’s fine. Things get tricky when someone tries to imitate the style and voices of famous stars or bands in a way that disadvantages the original artist—and it isn’t labeled as an imitation.
Here’s an example from Germany: there’s a singer in the Schlager scene named Helene Fischer. Then there’s “Felene Hischer” online, featuring wonderfully risqué lyrics. Anyone listening recognizes the original artist’s voice almost immediately—BUT it is clearly labeled.
Do I want new songs from the late Elvis, Prince, MJ, or whoever else that don’t originate from the artist themselves? I don’t think so. I’d rather have a new voice or style of music than the thirteenth copy of someone else. But… we won’t be able to stop it.
Perhaps there should be general rules: consent from the original party (whoever currently holds the rights), and revenue must be shared between the original rights holders and the new artists.

There are very few world famous Norwegian musicians, but for once I can post a birthday greeting to one of them. Pål Waaktaar Gamst, better known to the world as Paul Waaktaar-Savoy is turning 65 today. He is of course best known as the guitarist and main songwriter in A-Ha, the Norwegian pop band who had huge worldwide succes in the 1980’s and 90’s.
Paul Waaktaar-Savoy also has/had a hobby band called Savoy, who I actually may like better than A-Ha. So to celebrate Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, here’s a song by Savoy later recorded by A-Ha. I like Savoy’s original version best. So here’s to a splendid birthday, Pål

Some trivia and music history to end this post. Before A-Ha Paul Waaktaar-Savoy was the singer and guitarist in a band called Bridges. Magne (Mags) Furuholmen of A-Ha played keyboards in the band’s and towards the end of the band short career, Morten Harket joined as the singer, the band changed their name and…the rest is pop history.
Bridges was heavily inspired by The Doors, and they released one album on a small independent Norwegian record label (before Morten joined). I had the LP back in the day, and I found it to be decent enough. I heard them as a very promising band, but not quite there yet. Here’s my favourite from the LP.

I am most certainly not in favor of AI in music!
The hours musicians spend practicing, learning, and experimenting should be appreciated more than someone making a song in a back room on a simple laptop using AI, and having the most popular musical notes, instruments, and lyrics put together.
A song like this could have been made by AI, but this is an existing popular band in Ireland, where Trump will soon be visiting.
