The only thing I remember from back then is Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft, or DAF as they are probably best known as.

NDW was a crazy time. Although it actually happened before I started getting interested in music, and because I grew up in the other part of Germany, I know a lot of the songs…
It startet around 1976 and ended around 1984. Many well-known tracks belong to it, even though you wouldn’t expect to find them there. Here are a few famous examples, and since we’re an international forum, I’ve looked for the English versions:
Technohead - I Wanna Be A Hippy
RUN DMC, Jason Nevins - It’s Like That
RUN DMC ft. Aerosmith - Walk This Way
Aerosmith - Dream On (Live At Capitol Center, Largo, MD / November 9, 1978)

Andrea Bocelli - Who Wants To Live Forever (with Brian May)
Nice to find a fellow Quo idiot over here, this is part of my collection, there are two on the road with friends, hope to see them Back here
I picked one of my favorites ‘ slow train ‘
Thanks for an intersting post. And enlightening too. It seems NDW is a much wider concept than I thought. I’ve always understood it as something like the cold and industrial sounding electro-punk of DAF.
Both Nena and Falco were hits in Norway too, so I remember them very well. Peter Schilling on the other hand is new to me.
Then it’s Kraftwerk, who I’m very familiar with. I bought Autobahn back in the mid-70’s, and I still have three of their albums. However, that they can be considered NDW is new to me. I’ve always seen them as a kraut-rock band, in the same tradition as say Can, Tangerine Dream, Neu or Klaus Schultze.
Wow, that’s cool. It seems you are a bigger Quo fan than me. I only have Piledriver, Hello and 12 Gold Bars compilation. I used to have Quo, On the Level and the double live one from the 70’s too, but they have slipped away somewhere along the road.
I have to admit I lost a little interest in Quo after that live album, when the band went a little more commercial. Still, those rocking albums from the 70’s I still give a spin now and then.
I see from your pic that Quo is one of the albums that are out on the road. Best get it back home before it gets homesick

It’s not a concept in the sense of a specific type of music. It was a feeling of the times, an idea to make German-language music in an era dominated by English music, and an inexhaustible supply of creativity, packed into lyrics that were sometimes profound, sometimes humorous, sometimes protest songs. In a way, a kind of ‘punk’.
AI video with original lyrics, but English subtitles. The song itself is now over 40 years old… and yet it still feels, or once again, relevant.
Finding suitable titles isn’t easy. For the sake of the forum, I prefer songs that at least have good subtitles or have been released in English. Unfortunately, a few of the most relevant ones for me are only available in German.
Deep in the forest, among moss and ferns
There lived a beetle named Karl
His life was abruptly disrupted
When he heard a dull rumble
Noisy machines rolled over the forest
Soon drowning out the birdsong
With sharp axes, tree after tree was felled
Destroying his habitat
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked
He was simply chased away
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked
He was simply chased away
A ribbon of asphalt spreads out
Forcing nature to retreat
A flower still standing by the roadside
Simply tarred over
Karl is long gone
There’s no place for animals anymore
Where Karl once called home
Now beetles of tin and steel drive
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked
He was simply chased away
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked
He was simply chased away
Karl the beetle He wasn’t asked.
He was simply chased away.
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked.
He was simply chased away.
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked.
He was simply chased away.
Karl the beetle wasn’t asked.
He was simply chased away.

My bad, I see “concept” was a wrong choice of word here. Feeling, idea and attitude are much better, even if the artists can sound very different. It’s the same with “progressive rock”, “punk rock”, “grunge”, “brit pop” or whatever style of music we can think of.
I was a little narrow minded here. So I guess this goes for NDW too. This song was also a big hit in Norway, where it peaked at number 2 in the charts.

The song I Want To be a Hippy made me think of a lost “classic” from 1967. Sometimes it might be difficult to be a flower child

The Jefferson Handkerchief - I’m Allergic to Flowers
Never knew there was an English version of that.
After being thoroughly schooled in German music, I still have a tribute to make. Because 85 years ago today the American singer David Ruffin (1941-1991) was born. He was one of the vocalists in The Temptations, one of the biggest vocal groups on the record label Tamla Motown in the 1960’s and 70’s.
The Temptations had lots of big hits back in the day. One of their biggest hits were My Girl, which was sung by David Ruffin. It’s a fantastic song. So here’s to David Ruffin’s memory ![]()
The Temptations - My Girl (1964)
I didn’t know either. I was just searching because NaggeDanseGanseDaag had released an English version of Spliff, and then I found it.. ![]()
