That statement makes me think it doesn’t belong in the ‘fun’ category…
I’s like to pay tribute to the English bass player Andrew Bodnar, who passed away recently at the age of 71. He’s best known as the bassist in Graham Parker & The Rumour, The Rumour’s “solo” albums and on several of Parker’s solo albums. He has also toured and/or recorded with among others Elvis Costello, The Pretenders and Thompson Twins.
Andrew Bodnar also co-wrote and played bass on Nick Lowe’s hit single (number 7 in the UK) I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass. So it is a well repected, still mostly unknown, bass player who gets a well deserved mention in our topic today. Thank you for the music Andrew, may you be remembered ![]()
Graham Parker & The Rumour - Silly Thing (live 1977)
Nick Lowe - I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass (1978)
The Rumour - Frozen Years (1979)
Shit, did it get this long again? I just get so easily carried away when old favourites suddenly are gone. I guess you’ll just have to bear with me ![]()
The fine American singer and songwriter Robert Earl Keen Jr. is turning 70 today. To celebrate his birthday, here’s an old favourite of mine. Happy Birthday, Robert ![]()
Robert Earl Keen Jr. - Christabel (1984)
While we’re at it, since it was Christmas just recently…
Robert Earl Keen Jr. - Merry Christmas From the Family (live circa 1995)
Arcade Fire - Wake Up (2004)
Something different but very cool. There are some cool gems hidden in there

John William Baldry, better known as Long Jong Baldry, was a singer who appeared on the English blues scene in the 1960’s. He was well respected on the scene and shared stage with among others The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Animals. Rod Stewart and Elton John were member of bands led by him, before they went on to become the superstars we know today.
Long John Baldry had a couple of minor hits in the 1960’s, and although he never became the big star some of his contemporaries became, he had a decent enough career. He released records, toured, and appeared in movies and TV shows almost all the way until he passed away from a serious chest infection in 2005.
Long John Baldry - (Walk Me Out in the) Morning Dew (1980)
There’s a long piano intro, but after about one minute things start to happen. Trust me, it does!
Long John Baldry was gay, back in a time when homosexuality was forbidden by law in the UK. He once led a band, where one of the members were Reg Dwight. They also shared a flat, together with a guy named Bernie Taupin. Reg was struggling with his sexual identity, and was contemplating suicide once. Long John was the one that talked him out of it.
Reg Dwight eventually took the name Elton John, and the rest is history. However, Elton John did not forget this. The “John” part of his stage name is Long John Baldry. Along with Bernie Taupin, he also wrote a song about it. The “someone” in Someone Saved My Life Tonight is Long John Baldry, and the “sugar bear” in the lyrics is also Long John Baldry.

Long John Baldry’s nickname was no coincidence. He was over two metres tall.
He was born 85 years ago today. To his memory ![]()
oh man , that song does a lot to me..
Original from Bonnie Dobson, but a lot of very nice versions
yesterday in the news because of the death from Robert Hall Weir
and one of my favorite bands Nazareth
But Yes, Long John Baldry his version was the very best
this is the short version but with a very nice clip of him in his early years
this was 13 years later as the new version that you posted became a hit
also the short version (radio edit)
Bonnie Dobson is my favorite of these versions

Oh yes, it’s a great song. If I remember correctly, the first version I heard was by the Jeff Beck Group, with Rod Stewart on vocals. Must have been around 1980.
I was actually not aware that the original was by Bonnie Dobson. My friends often see me as a walking music encyclopedia, but I still have a few new things to learn ![]()
Now for @Mohrchi, who likes Bonnie Dobson’s version best. When Robert Plant shared stage with her in 2013, he pulled back and left the front of the stage to her.
Bonnie Dobson, with Robert Plant - Morning Dew (live 2013)
And Bonnie Dobson is still alive. She turned 85 last November.
I Heard It Through The Grapevine
With Tammi Terrell - Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Orchestra Baobab - Nijaay (live 2017)
From Senegal. Excellent musicians, catchy melody and rhythm and all around good stuff.
