Yes, that’s interesting. Did some Wikipedia, and variants of these lines can be found in folk songs from as far back late eighteenth-century/early nineteenth-century. According to Wikipedia “The many variants feature various young soldiers, sailors, maids, and cowboys, being cut down in their prime and contemplating their deaths.” Perhaps Odetta made it sixteen because this was an old person contemplating her death 
Another interesting thing is how the song in Odetta’s version becomes a completely different song than the (good) versions popularized by The A____ls and Frijid Pink in the 1960’s.
