Gavin Dunne aka Miracle of Sound with one of my favorite songs by him
Face it, Bats…
You’d be lost without me!
Today December 31 is the birthday of American folk singer Odetta Holmes. She was born in 1930, and she passed away in 2008. Here’s her version of The House of the Rising, live from 2005.Her voice had obviously lost some of its power, but this is still my favourite version of this song.
Today December 31 is the birthday of Pete Quaife, bass player and co-founder of one of my favourite bands ever, The Kinks. He was born 1943 and passed away 2010. and probably mosrly forgotten today. I want to give him another mention.
I know, wrong side of the year, but we’ll get there again
“Get six(teen?) pretty maidens to carry my coffin…” at 2:40. Sixteen seems a little greedy.
Now these coffin carrying maidens show up in the House of the Rising Sun? It’s fascinating how in folk songs the lines between songs get blurred as lines of lyrics migrate from song to song. These coffin carrying maidens seem to show up a lot. I’ve heard variations of these lines in Streets of Laredo, here by Johnny Cash or The Unfortunate Lad, as heard in the Coen Brothers’ movie “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”.
