Over the past few days, I worked with the two of them to bring an idea—known as a “lithophane” —to life using a 3D printer.
These are images printed in white material that are illuminated from behind; the varying thickness of the relief filters the light differently, thereby creating a black-and-white image.
If they can find someone with a 3D printer in their area (or if they already know someone), this could potentially become part of their merchandise.
What size are these? I’m surprised to see so much detail on the pubic hairs.
The close-up seems more refined than the anal shot. How do these diagonally hatched(?) areas on her thighs come to be? In such low contrast areas, shouldn’t it be smoother surfaces?
108x144mmx3,2mm (for the picture only; the frame with the lighting adds another 1.8 cm in thickness)
This occurs because the printer changes the print direction by 90° in every layer.
And we are talking about layer heights of 0.08 mm here.
I have never seen these printed. Must take quite awhile. I have been machining these into lexan and pvc for over 20 years. The photo used is made to be black and white. The software assigns a Z depth in increments between the black and white, that the end mill will travel to remove the material. I have machined hundreds of photos in various materials along with using various light sources. my favorite and most challenging was cylindrical using a light turn table for display.
building up the layers is quite interesting, and quality outcome dependent on the wire used I suppose. Good job, they look nice.
Even with a fast printer, you have to plan for 3.5-4.5 hours…
Yes, the underlying principle is the same. You have to remove material, whereas I have to deposit it. Your advantage is this: you can create perfectly smooth transitions, whereas my smallest practical resolution is limited by a layer height of 0.08 mm.
And yes, the material is crucial. Thats why i’m a bit dissatisfied with the quality of these two prints. I currently have a white at home that I would describe as ‘chalky,’ even though it’s from the same manufacturer and has the same color name as the white I used before, which is more ‘milky’… you have to be lucky and get it from the right factory.
Fortunately, however, my only objective here was to test various images to identify which ones—in terms of overall contrast—are actually suitable for printing in the first place… Dark hair against a dark background, for instance, is… well, suboptimal. The human eye can make sense of it, but the printer simply cannot.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison—under identical lighting conditions—of a print made with the earlier material versus the current one. The print on the right absorbs much more light per layer; as a result, the illumination is more uneven and “splotchy,” and the piece as a whole blocks out significantly more light.
The largest lithophane print I’ve made to date was a spherical lampshade—approximately 25 cm in diameter—that is illuminated from the inside, making it look just like the moon… That took a little over three days to print.
I still have a significantly smaller version of that same type of sphere (featuring our globe as the motif) here at home.
The color tone of the one on the right can be produce by machining into Natural Delrin or PVC. I would recommend this for certain vintage or character photos. The one on the left can machined into white Delrin. I would choose this for Lithos that were placed in windows being hung by a suction cup hanger.
Your Globe is Outstanding and worth the 3 days of machine time. ![]()

Wraps, #Timelapse
A bit choppy—unfortunately, the stream isn’t completely stable.
A few still images aren’t the worst thing ![]()
I wanted to see if you could actually deconstruct a wrap:
It seems feasible ![]()
This one sandstone effect we like very much too. Amazing work @JonR
really think to make some merch, first will do for us and than maybe some amount for fans
I rather ask myself why he is walking outside in his pyjamas ![]()
?
I like that style - outside in pyjama. Never did it and liked very much.

Working for other publications, has Diana ever done a girl on girl scene, or would she ever do one? I’d like to see that.
