It used to be fun to see some of the other women who stayed over. Older, younger, heavy, skinny… A good cross section of the female of the species.

You might be right. The fact is this appartment gets more boring day after day.
A little outdated and off topic if I may, but that’s not true. Over watering the tomato plants is the number one cause for tomato end rot.
People forget that it is a tropical plant that needs moist soil, not wet soil. Leaf wilting in the heat of a hot day is perfectly normal, even if there is sufficient moisture in the soil. The plant stops respirating at temperatures above 32-33 C. When the temperature drops, it starts again. The best example of this is the foliage of courgettes, cucumbers, chard, etc…
Wilted leaves give people a hint that the plant is short of water, they start watering and the soil quickly becomes waterlogged and the root system rots. In the case of tomatoes, rotting of the lower part and cracking of the fruit.
This is why we use soil moisture probes at the nursery. Measured just half an hour ago, the soil is at the upper limit of suitable moisture, although the plants look sadder in the scorching sun. As soon as they are in the shade they perk up again.
