The first round of the 2026/27 DFB-Pokal (German Cup) kicks off this coming Friday, which will probably be of interest mainly to German football fans. Teams from the top five tiers of German football will face each other, having qualified for the competition through the relevant channels.

Missed this one bye a day, since it’s past midnight now, but the French striker Just Fontaine (1933-2023) was born 93 years ago yesterday. This man has got the most impressive statistics when it comes to goals scored. In the 1958 World Cup, the only World Cup he played in, he was the top scorer with 13 goals. This number of goals in one tournament is yet to be topped, 68 years and 17 World Cups later!
In addition, Just Fontaine is still ranked number seven of the players with most goals scored in the World Cup! All of the six players above him have played in at least two World Cups, these six being Kane, Müller, Ronaldo (the Brazilian one), Klose. Messi and Mbappe.
Due to injury problems, Just Fontaine’s football career ended when he was just 28. He only got to play 21 matches for the French national team, in which he scored 30 goals! During his club career, he scored 226 goals in 240 matches! This man surely knew the difference between the inside and outside of a goalpost

The new Bundesliga season kicks off this coming Friday. In the opening match of the 64th Bundesliga season, reigning champions FC Bayern Munich will face VfB Stuttgart at home. The match kicks off at 8.30 pm and will be broadcast on Free TV on Sat.1 from 7.50 pm.
The match will be interesting because Stuttgart have a new striker, Dzenan Pejcinovic, who has only played once so far but has scored three goals in that game. Will he be able to maintain that form against Kane’s team?

Norwegian football history got a new chapter yesterday. For the first time Norway’s got two teams in the Champion’s League, Bodø/Glimt (from Bodø) and Viking (from Stavanger)

Just a mention of the Norwegian king Harald the 5th, who passed away this morning at the age of 89. He was a beloved king, a chill guy with with a good sense of humour
What may be Harald’s last public appearance where he was really happy, was about six weeks ago, when the Norwegian team came home after Norway’s best performance in international football since the 1930’s. Harald invited the team to the royal castle in Oslo, sat down and had a chat and a laugh with them. Here’s king Harald and goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.
Just for the record, Harald was a Tottenham supporter.
