The first round of the 2026/27 DFB-Pokal (German Cup) kicks off this coming Friday, which will probably be of interest mainly to German football fans. Teams from the top five tiers of German football will face each other, having qualified for the competition through the relevant channels.

Missed this one bye a day, since it’s past midnight now, but the French striker Just Fontaine (1933-2023) was born 93 years ago yesterday. This man has got the most impressive statistics when it comes to goals scored. In the 1958 World Cup, the only World Cup he played in, he was the top scorer with 13 goals. This number of goals in one tournament is yet to be topped, 68 years and 17 World Cups later!
In addition, Just Fontaine is still ranked number seven of the players with most goals scored in the World Cup! All of the six players above him have played in at least two World Cups, these six being Kane, Müller, Ronaldo (the Brazilian one), Klose. Messi and Mbappe.
Due to injury problems, Just Fontaine’s football career ended when he was just 28. He only got to play 21 matches for the French national team, in which he scored 30 goals! During his club career, he scored 226 goals in 240 matches! This man surely knew the difference between the inside and outside of a goalpost
