I asked ChatGPT “England are playing Croatia in the World Cup today. It is the opening match for both teams. Who are likely to win, and why?”

Answer:

England are the more likely winners, but this is probably one of the closest opening matches of the group stage.

Most analytical models and betting markets make England clear favourites, with Opta’s supercomputer giving them roughly a 56 per cent chance of winning, compared with about 21 per cent for Croatia and the remainder for a draw.

Why England are favourites

Greater depth and firepower. England’s attack is built around players such as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, and they generally have stronger options across the squad than Croatia.
An outstanding qualifying campaign. England won all eight qualifiers and did not concede a single goal, which is one reason many analysts see them as genuine title contenders.
Recent head-to-head trend. Whilst Croatia famously beat England in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, England have avoided defeat in the three meetings since then, including a win at Euro 2020.

Why Croatia can still win

Tournament pedigree. Croatia reached the 2018 World Cup final and the 2022 semi-finals, and they are experts at staying competitive in high-pressure matches.
Elite midfield experience. Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovačić and their experienced core can control possession and frustrate opponents.

ChatGPT’s expectation

If the match is open and played at England’s tempo, England should win. If Croatia can slow it down and turn it into a tactical midfield battle, their chances rise significantly.

Predicted result: England 2–1 Croatia. England have the stronger squad and greater attacking threat, but Croatia’s experience makes an upset or draw far from impossible.

The offside rule, as it currently stands, is utter rubbish. It spoils so much…

yup especially when youhave the big i am ! spending 90% of the time in a possible offside position ,stops the forward play thus stagnating the game

Yes, but they’re professionals, and if they can’t manage that, it’s their own fault. But if half the team is in the penalty area, what’s the point of that bloody rule anyway?!

100% error rate

He was talking about grandpa Ronaldo. And he really only had to shots on goal…

I didn’t say he’d scored…

i guess you was watching the same game as him , but not the same as the rest of us portugal only had one shot on target and they scored from it , . kicking towards goal doesnt constitute as a shot on target

A I meant kicked towards the goal. I think the correct wording would be “Attempt on target” ?
