As far as Germany is concerned, if you only look at the World Cups, you’re absolutely right. But there are also the Euros, the Nations League, and friendly matches, and I was already pretty disappointed because, based on those competitions, Germany hadn’t looked nearly as bad as the final World Cup result turned out to be.
That disappointment, though, had actually started even before the tournament had begun — when Nagelsmann completely failed, in my opinion, in terms of communication and handling the human side of his goalkeeper decision. But that’s a whole different topic.
My last post about the penalty blunder was pure self-irony. And I’m glad that by now I can take it with some humor and laugh about it. 
Yes, I get where you’re coming from. But even so, if you look at the Euros and the Nations League, Portugal’s underperformance becomes even more apparent—since Portugal actually outperformed Germany in those competitions. I do view Germany as a disappointment, certainly, but not on the same level as the disappointment I felt regarding Portugal.

You’re probably right about Portugal, but let’s be honest: did you really see them as one of the favorites for the title before the tournament had even started? I mean, when you look at their past achievements and compare them with the teams that have a real trophy-winning pedigree…
No, I never considered them title favorites, but failing to register a single shot on goal during an entire second half—in a scoreless match against a lethargic Spain side—is just pathetic. That’s not to mention their poor performance throughout the group stage; they deserved to lose to Colombia and didn’t deserve to beat Croatia.
