I hadn’t heard of this rule before…
During today’s Turkey vs. Paraguay match, Paraguayan forward Miguel Almirón covered his mouth with his hand while speaking during an on-field confrontation. After a VAR review, the referee decided to show him a straight red card. ![]()
The decision was based on a new FIFA/IFAB rule introduced shortly before the World Cup. Under the rule, players can be sent off if they deliberately cover their mouth with a hand, arm, or shirt while arguing with an opponent. The idea is to make it harder to hide discriminatory, racist, or abusive comments during confrontations on the pitch.
That makes Almirón the first player in World Cup history to be sent off under this new rule.
How curious, how curious!
What if he just told his buddy that he likes him—and would like to see him again in the shower…?

Was introduced after the game between Real and Atletico Madrid, when a player from Atletico called Vinicius some racist names while covering his mouth. Was a big scandal back then, Real players wanted to exit the pitch

Nah, everything is definitely real this time;
the fact that the goal looks completely wrongly assembled is just down to IKEA’s legendary instructions… ![]()
I think it’s good that football is making progress in this regard. Racist insults or abuse aimed at a player’s family have absolutely no place on the pitch.
