Because today 40 years ago today the wreck of the Titanic was discovered:

Only when this search was completed and there was still time left, Robert Ballard could pursue his hobby.
By the way: experts suspect that in 5-10 years, hardly any major remains of the wreck will remain. Bacteria and rust are doing their work in destroying the wreck.

It is the bacteria who actually eat away the rust, thus destabilizing the material and dissolving it. They feed on the oxygen in the rust (Fe2O3).

The Titan accident was just an example of Natural Selection 
Jesus, Jabba, that’s about as cold-hearted as it gets. Five people died on that submersible and not because of anything to do with natural selection, which takes generations, BTW.
