Fingers are one thing but use of buttonhooks for THAT purpose, sounds pretty drastic and potentially very dangerous! :open_mouth:

I wholeheartedly agree, but this was waaaay back when there were few checks and balances.

President Roosevelt visited Ellis Island and observed this procedure, noting that, doesn’t using the fingers to check for an infection transfer that infection to other people? (Of course, the buttonhook would do the same thing.) Trachoma is an eyelid infection that can lead to blindness if left untreated.

That’s probably because they were used way back in the day when button-up shoes and many-button clothes were all the rage, as one might say, before zippers were invented.

Initially, zippers were used mainly in shoes and tobacco pouches. The zipper was invented (technically) in 1917, but it wasn’t until 1923 that the name was first used. An American company called B.F. Goodrich Company used Sundback’s (the zipper’s inventor) design on boots and coined the term zipper. Goodrich came up with the name based on the noise a zipper makes when you use it!

I’ve seen this girl in action before. She is quite flexible, although I wish she’d smile.

Couldn’t hear the music, but the visuals are amazing!!

I wasn’t overly struck by the sound of it myself, to be honest. However, the visuals as you say, were amazing! The science behind it all, really is quite something.

I’ll bet Nikola Tesla had something to do with the science behind it all. That would be my guess, anyway.
