Status Quo - Is There A Better Way

Happy Birthday to German keyboard player Irmin Schmidt, who is turning 87 today. He was a member of Can, one of the biggest and most influential bands on the kraut-rock scene in the 1970’s. After singer Damo Suzuki passed away in February this year, Irmin Schmidt is the only surviving member of what is often considered the classic line-up of the band. Yet he was the oldest of the five members in the group.

After Can broke up in 1979, Irmin Schmidt has kept himself busy. Apart from a few Can reunions, he has made music for movies and TV shows and released solo albums, the last one in 2018. So here’s a toast to a kraut-rock legend, Happy Birthday!

Can - Spoon

If anyone actually listens to this song, and find it a little out-there, you are probably right. However, this is actually a hit single. In 1971 Spoon was used as the theme song in the popular German TV series Das Messer (The Knife). When released as a single it peaked at number 6 in the German charts. Sometimes the charts move in mysterious ways.

Michelle Phillips - No Love Today

Happy Birthday to Michelle Phillips! The only member of The Mamas & The Papas still alive is turning 80 today! I propose a toast…or two :wine_glass: :wine_glass:

While looking for a song by The Mamas & The Papas not already posted here, I came upon a song by Michelle Philips as a solo artist. I haven’t heard any of here solo stuff before, but this is actually a fine song. May certainly need some further investigation. Cheers again, by the way :wine_glass:

Ah, what the heck, while we’re at it.

The Four Tops - I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)

Today we may celebrate the memory of Levi Stubbs, lead singer in Tamla Motown act The Four Tops, and to me one of the finest voices in the history of modern popular music. He would have turned 88 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2008. To celebrate his memory, here is the first song by the Four Tops to hit the number one spot in the US charts.

To end of this tribute with a little trivia about the song, it enterd number 1 in July 1965, just to be replaced the week after by Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds. The Four Tops regained the top spot the week after, just to lose it again to The Rolling Stones’ (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction next week. So who knows, perhaps I Can’t Help Myself would’ve had more weeks at the top if the competition hadn’t been so steep during these particular weeks

Prince - The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Cheers to the memory of Prince Rogers Nelson, best known to the world as just Prince. This immensley talented singer, songwriter and musician (multi-instrumentalist) would have turned 66 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2016. Prince left us a treasure trove of songs, and it’s difficult to choose one on this occasion. Might as well go for a lesser known song in tribute to his memory.

Now this song may come with some trivia. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is refererencing Joni Mitchell, one of Prince’s favourite artists. However, there was an American poet and writer named Dorothy Parker (1893-1967). Prince was once asked if he was familiar with this author. Allegedely he answered that he had never heard of her and that it was just a random name that popped up in his head.

Dorothy Parker passed away on the 7. of June in 1967, the same day that Prince turned 9 years old! So there is more than one connection between Prince and this lady writer than just the name of one of his songs. Coincidence or…? Nah, most probably just trivia from me again. Completely useless as such, but fun nonetheless
