Crosby, Stills & Nash - Marrakesh Express

Happy Birthday to Graham Nash of The Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He is turning 82 today, so here’s one of his songs to celebrate his birthday.

There’s a funny story to the cover of this classic album. The guys were driving around LA with the photgrapher, just shooting pics here and there. They liked this pic, but noticed that it looked more like Nash, Stills & Crosby, which wasn’t quite right for the album cover.

So they decided to go back the day after and take the pic once more, with the guys in the right order. However, when they arrived, the house was gone. It had been demolished earlier in the day. So they settled for Nash, Stills & Crosby. And as far as I know, nobody’s complained about that yet

Chicago ~ Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

I’d like to hang on to this congratulation. Graham Nash with The Hollies was the first “big band” I saw live (1966 at Folkets Hus). I was a 14-year-old “free working roadie” for a Norwegian warm-up band from my neighborhood.
A story about this tune. It is Graham Nash’s song but you hear backup vocals from
David Crosby at least. Stephen Stills (who is originally from Dallas) did not want to go to Chicago after the 1968 Democratic Convention. Graham wrote this song to Stephen begging him to “Come to Chicago no one else can take your place, Show your face” They were all anti-war and Graham felt that by going “We can change the world”. Could be used today as well!

Wow, I can see the good the memory there. And we’re talking Folkets Hus at Youngstorget? I had no idea there were concerts there back in the day.

There were several concerts there. The band was Public Enemies, the Beatnicks also played that night.

MC5 - Kick Out the Jams

I want to pay tribute to American guitarist Wayne Kramer, who passed away yesterday at the age of 75. He was one of the guitar players in the legendary Detroit garage rock band MC5. Their best known song is Kick Out the Jams, with its rallying cry: “Kick Out the Jams, M____rfuckers”. It is a kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll song, and a fitting tribute to Wayne Kramer’s memory. Thank you for the music Wayne, may you be remembered.

There is a funny story related to this song. Early in MC5’s career gigs were rather sparse, and the band took every chance they could get to play live. Once their manager John Sinclair got them a gig at, of all things, a Catholic girl school!

John was worried about the M____rfucker-thing, so he begged singer Rob Tyner to not say the word on stage as usual. Rob just grinned back: “We’ll see about that” When the band started playing John stood next to the head nun, who suprisingly enough were rather bemused by the whole spectacle.

Then the band were getting ready to Kick Out the Jams, and the poor manager stood there next to the head nun, nervously wishing and hoping. Rob Tyner grabbed the mic and yelled out: “Kick Out the Jams, M____r Superior”.

Dave Davies - Death of a Clown

Happy Birthday to Dave Davies, guitarist in The Kinks, who is turning 77 today Not only a guitar player, but also a singer and a songwriter, Dave got to sing his own songs on several Kinks albums.

Death of a Cown is arguably the most succesful of these. Released as a solo single, it charted in several European countries, the highest being at no. 2 in the Netherlands. So to celebrate the birthday the guitarist in one of my all time favourite bands…

Melanie would have turned 77 today. She got a bit of attention here when she passed last week, but when this one showed up in my YouTube recommendatins today, I thought I just have to share it with you guys in here. Sound quality is not the best, but still decent. This is nine minutes of music history.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Jammin’

Today I want to celebrate the memory of one of the big personalities in modern music Bob Marley. He would have turned 79 years today if he had not died of cancer at the age of 36. Marley’s contribution to music irrefutably increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide, and made him a global figure in popular culture.
