Well, since I got another one, this one is to the memory of the American singer-songwriter Warren Zevon, who would have turned 77 today, if he hadn’t passed away in 2003 at the age of 56.
Although he had a pretty decent career, this man to me is sadly under appreciated. He was a great songwriter with both strong melodies and lyrics. I got to see him live once in the latter part of the 1980’s. Good gig! Cheers to Warren Zevon’s memory.
I haven’t really done the math there, but it’s good to meet more like-minded folks here anyway. A fine song is a fine song…regardless of image or whatever
Today I want to congratulate the Norwegian group a-ha. On this day in 1986 they were at No.1 in the UK with “The Sun Always Shines On TV”. Thus becoming the first ever Norwegian act to score a UK No.1 hit single. The track was released as the third single from their debut studio album, Hunting High and Low (1985).
Damn, another old favourite is gone. I listened a lot to Melanie from the late 70’s to the mid 80’s, and quite a little bit now and then after too. She was not always the “hippie babe” she’s often portrayed as. Her songwriting and performance was much more diverse than that. What’s also is often forgotten is what a good singer she was!
Now this “beutiful people” has left us, just a week and a half short of turning 77.
Melanie Safka - Tuning My Guitar
Melanie Safka - I Tried To Die Young
There’s already a to tribute Melanie here, but bear with me, I just had to make mine.
This was written in 1959. Had it been written today, it would have been at least 5 minutes long.
Tom Lehrer is still alive and 95 years old. Most of these funny songs was written during his student years in the 50’s and 60’s. Can’t help myself but here is another favorite of mine (sorry )!
Today it’s time to once again celebrate the memory of Kate Wolf, who would have turned 82 today. Sadly, due to cancer she passed away in 1986 at the age of 44. Kate was an exceptionally gifted songwriter, to me probably the most under appreciated ever.
I have posted about Kate Wolf before, but I want to use any opportunity to plug her songs. Anyone still reading, if you like simple and essential songs with a folk/country feel to them, please check out Kate Wolf and keep her memory alive. You are in for a treat!
In fact, according to statistics, this is the unbeatable biggest hit song from ESC ever. Number 1 on the US Billboard for five consecutive weeks in 1968.
Happy Birthday to John Lydon who is turning 69 today Singer in post-punk/new wave band Public Image Ltd from 1978 until now, and before that (as Johnny Rotten) in the Sex P____ls. John is quite the character, with a distinct voice and a very outspoken personality. Here’s the song Rise (1986) to celebrate his birthday.
Don Everly would have turned 87 today, if he hadn’t passed away in August 2021. Along with his brother Phil, he had huge success as The Everly Brothers from 1957 through the 60’s. The duo had loads of songs charting in North-America, Europe and Australia, several of them at no. 1.
Many of the Everly Brothers’ songs have become staples in the canon of pop music. Which I find well deserved. Pop music doesn’t get much better than this. Now here is Don And Phil singing All I Have To Do Is Dream, an old favourite of mine.
Phil Everly passed away in 2014, and as mentioned Don passed in August 2021. What is strange here is that four months after Don’s passing, their m____r Margaret Embry Everly passed away at the age of 102! She was also a musician, with a career in the 1940’s, together with her sons as the Everly Family. Imagine being 102 and having outlived both you sons. Wow!
