It is unfortunately something that happens to many talented singer/songwriters all over the world. Interesant artist. He is also the son of one of those people we listened to a lot in the 70’s. From Bachman Turner Overdrive (Randy Bachman).
And yet, no music career for poor Tal. Although according to Wikipedia (and an article written by himself which is the only source for this) he once successfully campaigned to get a restaurant put Key lime pie back on their menu after they removed it. In case you were wondering what failed musicians do when they realize their career ended before it even began. But I don’t want to be too mean to him. “She’s So High” is a really good song.
B.T.O wre a terrific Canadian band
Bachman Turner Overdrive - You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet 1974
It started with The Guess Who and went on to B.T.O. Not bad to be from that time!
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Cry for The Bad Man - (Vocal Ronnie Van Zant)
Remembering Ronnie Van Zant would have turened 72 years today if still alive. He was an American singer best known as the original lead vocalist, primary lyricist and a founding member of the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was the older brother of Johnny Van Zant, the current Lynyrd Skynyrd lead vocalist. On October 20 1977, a plane carrying the band ran out of fuel. Van Zant and bandmates Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines were k__led.
Bill Hayes - The Ballad of Davy Crockett
Allow me something a little different today. Last Friday American actor Bill Hayes passed away at the age of 98. The Ballad of Davy Crockett has become a standard in the songbook of popular music, recorded by numerous artists through the years. but Bill Hayes was the singer on the first recording of the song in December 1954.
This is actually one of the first songs that I remember, although with Norwegian lyrics. Probably from a c___dren’s record sometime in the mid 1960’s.
The Rolling Stones - Winter
Happy Birthday to ex-Stone Mick Taylor, who is turning 75 today. To celebrate his birthday, here is a song fit for the season, with some excellent guitar playing from Mick T.
Arne Bendiksen - Davy Crocket
I couldn’t resist this one. From Norwegian TV in 1963. This was in television’s infancy in Norway. We got TV at home in 1960 (OL Roma 1960 first I remember).
Ha ha, yes that’s the one, although my memory of this song is from the radio. We didn’t get a TV until the early 70’s. TV came a bit later to northern parts of Norway than the southern parts. Well, I’m sure the others will forgive us, but perhaps it’s best not to get too lost down memory lane now
Paul Young - Everytime You Go Away
I want to congratulate Paul (Antony) Young an English musician, singer and songwriter who turn 67 today. He became a teen idol with his solo success in the 1980s. His hit singles include “Love of the Common People”, “Wherever I Lay My Hat”, “Come Back and Stay”, “Every Time You Go Away” and “Everything Must Change”, all reaching the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.
I’ve been (am) a Mark Knopfler “Stalker” since I Saw Dire Straits for the first time in 1979 and three more times until 1992. Have also seen Mark Knopfler on a few occasions since.
Janis Joplin - One night stand
I want to celebrate the memory of one of the biggest personalities and tragedies in the history of rock music. Janis Joplin would have turned 81 today if he hadn’t passed away in 1970. Thus she became one of the early “members of the 27 years club” .A quote from an American DJ which says a lot about Janis:
Now “c___dren” before there was Celine Dion, and Britney etc there was Janis. Now granted you may not have wanted to take her home to meet your Mum (unless your Mum was Amy Winehouse of course) but Janis could belt out a song and could _____ most men under the table. My kinda gal!
A quote is said to come from Janis at a bar after a concert. “I just made love to 5000 people but go home alone”.
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
I will include one mentioned in the quote above, Amy Winehouse, that has a lot in common with Janis. She sadly became one of the later members of the “27 year club”.
Dolly Parton performs Jolene at Glastonbury - 2014
Mark Knopfler playing with Emmylou Harris made me want congratulate another US singer/songwriter Dolly Paton with her birthday turning 78 today. Whether you like country music or “hate it”, I just have to give credit to this chick for persevering all these years and achieving an incredible status in many music circles.
Underscoring this is her performance on the Glastonbury Festival in 2014 at the famous Pyramid Stage. Dolly drew the biggest crowds of any musical act at the Glastonbury festival at this time, over 100,000. She considered the invite to play there a big honor as her music has roots in Scotland, Ireland etc. Dolly seems surprised that the audience is singing with her. She said in an interview she didn’t know if anyone there would even know who she was made it turn out to be one of her best gigs.
Thanks for this! I am a huge Dolly Parton fan, and was thinking about posting someting with her yesterday.Somehow I never got around to doing it, but here she is. Dolly is a great sonwriter, with good melodies and lyrics that tell stories. While we’re at, allow me one more song by Dolly.
Dolly Parton - Dumb Blonde (1967)
