Good memories when Dire Straits were and still are one of my favourite bands. Saw them for the first time in 1979 and three more times until 1992. Have also seen Mark Knopfler on a few occasions since.!
It’s folk music, so since what we often refer to as American folk has its roots on the British Isles,it’s only natural the resemblance is there. Although Joni has quite a little bit more, she is unique!
Fairport Convention played at Kalvøya the year after Zappa. Where you there? If you are not very familiar with them or Sandy’s solo work, you may want to check it out a little more. Highly recommended, old favourites of mine.
I was not on Kalvøya in 1974 and 1975. I saw the Fairport Convention in Holstebro Hallen in Denmark in 1974. I can’t remember , but Sandy wasn’t with them then, was she? I’ve taken out some I’m listening to now. Great voice, but I actually remember that from earlier. Long time since I’ve played this. There are 45 solo songs on Spotify so there’s a lot of good stuff here! What’s odd is that there’s only about 1.5 min. film of Sandy with Fairport Convention.
Sandy was in and out of the band in the first part of the 70’s, so she might not have been on the gig you were at. Unfortunately she had personal problems, guilt feeling, because she felt she were too much away from her c___dren, stagefright and a_____l, all which led to her untimely death at 31. To me she was a unique talent.
Read an article now where her friend writes. “The thing that always amazed me about Sandy,” says her friend and contemporary Linda Thompson, “was that she thought she actually could appeal to the masses. Of course she couldn’t - and who would want to? If you’re writing songs that people can shoot themselves to, you know you’re not going to be in the charts. Sandy’s music was uncomfortable. It demanded too much.”
Yes it does, but it also gives back, in plenty. What a day, both my “obituaries” today are about personal tragedies, and big talent.

Robert Earl Keen - Feelin’ Good Again
Happy Birthday to Robert Earl Keen, who is turning 67 today. Yet another of these American singer-songwriters who are mostly unknown to the larger public, but still have a solid low-key career in music.
Robert Earl Keen has released around 20 albums since his debut in 1984. His songs have been covered by among others The Highwaymen, George Strait and Nanci Griffith. Plenty of fine song to choose from, with good melodies and lyrics.
Since we’re just done with Christmas, here’s a little bonus.
Robert Earl Keen - Merry Christmas From the Family
Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
I want to congratulate an American saxophonist, Clarence Clemons Stein also known as The Big Man. He would have turned 82 years today if still alive (January 11, 1942 – June 18, 2011). From 1972 until his death in 2011, he was the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band. He and Little Steven has been among “the core” of Bruce Springsteen`s Music career. At the end of shows, while recognizing members of the E Street Band, Springsteen referred to Clemons as “The Biggest Man You Ever Seen”.
Per Gessle - Roxette - Listen To Your Heart
Today I want to congratulate Per Håkan Gessle a Swedish singer, songwriter and guitarist with his birthday turning 65. He is best known as the male half and primary songwriter of the pop rock duo Roxette, which he formed with Marie Fredriksson in 1986 and which was disbanded after her death in 2019. The duo achieved international success in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their
albums Look Sharp! (1988) and Joyride (1991), and topped the charts in the US four times, most notably with “It Must Have Been Love” (posted earlier above) which was featured in the film Pretty Woman. Prior to the formation of Roxette, he had a successful career in his native Sweden as the frontman for Gyllene Tider. The band released three number-one albums during the early 1980s but disbanded shortly after their fourth album (1984).

I actually thought this was an original by the Norwegian artist Kurt Nilsen who in 2004 won the World Idol competition with this song!
Nope, but to be fair Tal Bachman is a one hit wonder and the song charted almost only in English speaking countries so I guess we got a lot less exposure to it here in continental Europe.
