Annie Lennox - Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)

Happy Birthday to Annie Lennox, known both from the duo with Dave Stewart as Eurythmics, and her solo career who is turning 69 today. In addition to her career as a musician, Lennox is also a political and social activist.

“There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)” is a song by the Eurythmics, released as the second single from their fifth studio album, “Be Yourself Tonight” (1985). It features a harmonica solo by American musician Stevie Wonder.
The song became a worldwide success most notably in Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom, where it remains the duo’s only chart-topper.

The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

Not for one of the Stones this time. Today it’s Happy Birthday to American singer Merry Clayton, the voice behind the iconic backing vocal on this classic Stones track. She’s turning 75 today.

Turns out Bonnie Bramlett was the bands first choice to do the backing, but her husband Delaney did not want his wife promoting the Rolling Stones. So we got Merry, and no one’s been complaining. Happy Birthday Merry!

The sound on this clip could have been better, but I went for it anyway, because of some lovely images of Merry and Mick Jagger, a little older than when they met for the recording session.

The last time I heard the song live was in my garden in 2017.
Back then, the Stones played in Hamburg’s city park and filled the entire city with sound.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - She’s So Fine

Let us celebrate the memory of English bass player and guitarist Noel Redding, who would have turned 78 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2003 aged 57. His name will always be remembered as one half of the backbone behind Jimi Hendrix.

On Jimi’ second album Axis: Bold as Love, Noel got to sing one of his own songs. It’s not the biggest classic, but a fine song it is, fitting to celebrate Noel Redding’s memory

Duke Fakir - Four Tops - Reach Out (I’ll Be There)

Happy Birthday to Duke Fakir a founding member of the Motown quartet the Four Tops, from 1953 to the present day, turning 88 today.
August 1966 brought the release of the Four Tops’ all-time biggest hit and one of the most popular Motown songs ever. “Reach Out I’ll Be There” reached number 1 on the U.S. pop and R&B charts[2] and the UK chart and soon became the Tops’ signature song.

My favourite Motown act! Duke has to be one of the oldest artists stil alive and active today. Let’s also raise our glasses to the three other original members, who are no longer with us. What a great voice Levi Stubbs had :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Lars Ulrich - Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar (Slane Castle - Meath, Ireland 2019)

Today I would like to congratulate Lars Ulrich, the Danish drummer in Metallica since its inception in 1981, on his 59th birthday. There are far too many songs to choose from, but I think this one shows that the group still has it!
