That was a good year
@GladNGrumpy Just out of curiosity. As I understood, you weren’t old enough to catch Zappa on “our own island either” in 1973 on “Isle of Calf ”. He came 7 or 8 more times. Did you get to see him on stage?
He he, “The Isle of Calf”. Well, you understand correctly. Unfortunately I never got to see Zappa live. One of my old friends up north back in the day, was a huge fan. It was him that got me into Zappa. He went down to Oslo once to see Zappa live, 78 or 79 in Ekeberghallen, I think it was
Yes Ekeberghallen was in 1977 and 1979. A “fun fact” I lived close by!
Wings (Paul McCartney and Wings) are, in my opinion, an underrated band!
The Wings are one of my favorite groups.
For me, Paul McCartney is one of the most brilliant musicians of all time.
The Moody Blues - Go Now (live 1965)
Wow, that got me thinking about Denny Laine, who is on keyboards on this song. He passed away just recently, aged 79. In addition to being a member of Wings for 10 years, Denny Laine also co-founded The Moody Blues, although he quit before they became the band we know them as today. Let’s remember Denny Laine with this song.
Oh s__t, it’s almost the neighborhood today. Now did you get to see Neil Young there, at about the same time, if I remember correctly? Genesis played there too, on The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour,. Once again if I remember correctly
Yes, both Neil Young 1976 and Genesis in 75 (clip on YouTube). There were a lot of groups there from about 1970 to 85, One of the most memorable was ELO in 1978.
Genesis - White Mountain
Happy Birthday to Anthony Phillips, who is turning 72 today. Anthony who you may ask. Well, he is one of the co-founders and the original guitarist in Genesis, a band that probably needs no further introduction.
Anthony Phillips is a seminal part of Genesis’ history. Band members have said that he was the driving f___e early on. Still in their teens when they started, Anthony was the one urging them to carry on. When he quit in 1970, the rest of the band seriously thought about disbanding. They didn’t and the rest is history.
Anthony Phillips released his first solo album in 1977, and has since released over 30 albums. To celebrate Anthony’s birthday, I choose this track from Genesis’ second album Trespass, written by him and Mike Rutherford.
Tim Hardin - If I Were A Carpenter (Live at Woodstock 1969)
Let us celebrate the memory of American singer-songwriter Tim Hardin. He would have turned 82 today, if he hadn’t passed away in 1980 at the age of 39. Yet another songwriter who is a little forgotten today, even though he wrote some great songs, covered by among many others Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.
Now in Tim’s memory, here is what may be his best known song.
Mountain - Mississippi Queen
Three years ago today Leslie West passed away at the age of 75. He was the guitarist and one of the singers in the great American band Mountain. They had a couple of hits and have a pretty solid place in the classic rock canon.
Yet I think they are a little under appreciated. To me Mountain were as good as almost anyone from that era. Let us remember Leslie West with Mountain’s biggest hit.
Dave Murray - Iron Maiden – The Writing On The Wall
Happy Birthday to Dave Murray, who is turning 67 today. He is an English guitarist, best known as a member of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975. He joined Iron Maiden early in its history, and is the second-longest serving member of the band after founder Steve Harris. He and Harris are the only members of Iron Maiden to have appeared on every album ( 41 albums, including 17 studio albums, 13 live albums).
Most recent, their 17th studio album, Senjutsu, was released on 3 September 2021 and eventually reached No. 1 in 27 countries. This is modern Iron Maiden at its very best, and shows a vital band that really sounds like they’re enjoying themselves.
The title track:
Alice Cooper Band, with Dave Murray - Ace of Spades
Happy Birthday to Dave Murray, one of the guitarists in Iron Maiden, who is turning 67 today. In celebration of his birthday, here’s a fun clip with him guesting Alice Cooper and his band on a tribute to Lemmy. A pretty low key tribute, from the looks of it.
Das ist noch Top Musik
Thanks for this one. I had my post hanging there, getting the error message “Only two consecutive posts”. I was about to ask someone to post something, and there you are
I had completely forgotten that the group was called Mountain, but the song Mississippi Queen I remember well!
Well, they were a damn fine band, been with me since the mid 70’s. Mountain’s first three LP’s are very good, still got one of them. Check them out, plenty of good stuff there. Perhaps there’s more you may remember.
