A true Rock Legend

Yes, Beefheart is one of a kind. A 20 years old Ry Cooder was the guitarist in The Magic Band on Beefheart’s debut LP from 1967. As for Zappa, there were some collaborations. Zappa produced one of Beefheart’s albums, they made one album together and the Captain sang on several Zappa records.

If you’re interested in further listening, I recommend Spotlight Kid, Clear Spot and Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller). And perhaps the debut, Safe As Milk. The album Trout Mask Replica is generally considered his masterpiece, but I never really got it. A little too far out for me

The Rolling Stones - Miss You

Since we’re in the Rolling Stones mood today, let’s stop for a moment and remember saxophonist Bobby Keys, long time member of the Stones touring band and part of the horn section on loads of Stones albums. He was also a popular session musician, appearing on records with among others Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton and Joe Cocker.

Bobby Keys passed away in 2014 at the age of 71. Today is his birthday, and he would have turned 80 together with Keith. Bobby’s saxophone is prominently featured in this 1995 live version of Miss You.

Sam Andrew - Big Brother and the Holding Company - Janis Joplin - Ball & Chain (Monterey pop festival 1967)

Remembering Sam Andrew today, original member and guitarist for the band Big Brother and the Holding Company that introduced Janis to the scene. He would have turned 82 today but died in 2015. Together they played at the iconic Monterey Pop Festival 1967 which became Janis Joplin’s breakthrough. He also went on to play guitar for the Kozmic Blues Band with Janis.

Alvin Lee - Ten years after - I`m going home (Woodstock festival in 1969)

I would like to celebrate the memory of Alvin Lee, the guitarist, vocalist and a founding member of the British rock band Ten Years After. He would have turned 79 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2013 due to a “unforeseen complications following a routine surgical procedure”. People called him “Captain Speed Fingers” because of his lightening fast playing. I think it was a proper nickname. I got to see him on stage twice.

Albert Lee, with Steve Morse - Country Boy

Happy Birthday to English guitarist and singer Albert Lee; who is turning 80 today. This brilliant guitar player remains unknown to the larger public. He is mostly a musicians musician, and has played in the backing band of among others Emmylou Harris and Bill Wyman, and has appeared on records with too many artists to mention here. Among them is Steve Morse, and here they are together with Country Boy.

Carl Wilson - The Beach Boys - I Can Hear Music

Also remembering Carl Wilson who would have turned 77 today if he hadn’t passed away in 1998 at the age of 51. Carl Dean Wilson was an American musician. He was a co-founder of the band known as one of the most influential in the history of modern popular music, The Beach Boys. He was their lead guitarist, the youngest sibling of bandmates Brian and Dennis, and the group’s de facto leader in the early to mid-1970s. He was also the band’s musical director on stage from 1965 until his death in 1998 after a long battle with lung cancer.
