Happy Birthday to Joni Mitchell, who is turning 80 today!
A1 - Everytime
Happy Birthday to Mark Read from A!, who is turning 45 today! They grow up!
(As f____r now son Christian Ingebrigtsen a singer/songwriter).
Happy Birthday! I saw Joni Mitchell at The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970.
Acts included Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Chicago, The Doors, Lighthouse,
The Who (whose set produced a live album), Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Supertramp, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, Free, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Kris Kristofferson, Donovan, Ralph McTell, John Sebastian, Terry Reid, Taste (Irish band), and Shawn Phillips.
Those were the days, now just good memories!
Wow, that is one of the legendary festivals form back in those days. I’ve watched quite a bit of YouTube clips from it. And you were there, fantastic! In my dreams, but I was only ten back then, stuck under the midnight sun
I had just turned eighteen. We had seen the film from woodstock at a cinema in Copenhagen in the spring. We wanted to see something similar and it worked out. I guess it turned out at least as big.
We were about 500 000 there!
Rickie Lee Jones - Danny’s All-Star Joint
Happy Birthday to American singer and songwriter Rickie Lee Jones, who is turning 69 today. I had the pleasure of seeing this excellent artist live some time around 1990. To celebrate her birthday, here is Danny’s All-Star Joint, a groovy song fom her self-titled debut album from 1979.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Lucky Man
Let us celebrate the memory of English singer, bassist and guitarist Greg Lake, who would have turned 76 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2016 at the age of 69. He was the co-founder of no less than two legendary bands, King Crimson and Emerson. Lake & Palmer (ELP).
Greg Lke was an accomplished musician, but what is sometimes forgotten is that he was a great singer too. To celebrate his memory, here is Lucky Man by ELP, the first song Greg Lake wrote when he got his first guitar at the age of 12.
In this context, we can also remember Greg Lake’s band colleague Keith Emerson, who would have turned 79 on November 2nd if he had not also died in 2016.
The Nice - America
Thanks for the reminder, Keith Emerson was a true artist and a wizard on the keyboards. Here’s a stunning performance by The Nice to remember him by.
XTC - Senses Working Overtime
Happy Birthday to singer, guitarist and songwriter Andy Partridge, who is turning 70 today. He co-founded the English band XTC, a sadly under appreciated band in in the history of rock and pop. With their catchty, quirky, clever and melodic music they kind of fell in between of every genre.
XTC arrived around the same time as punk, and were considered too clever to be part of that. On the other hand, they were not clever enough to appeal to the fans of the more classical rock that was popular back then. It didn’t help that they stopped touring altogether, due to Andy Partridge’s crippling stage fright.
However, to me XTC were a very good band. And they actually had quite a few minor hits. One of the “biggest” of these were Senses Working Overtime, which may be a fitting song in celebration of Andy Partridge on his birthday today.
Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones - Harlan County Line
Happy Birthday to American singer, guitarist and songwriter Dave Alvin, who is turning 68 today. He co-founded The Blasters in 1979, before going solo in 1986. Dave Alvin is a gifted songwriter, mixing his own brand of rock, blues and country with good stories, always with a groovy groove at the bottom.
To celebrate Dave Alvin’s birthday, here’s Harlan County Line, a good example of his craftmanship as a performer and as a songwriter.
John Joseph Maus
Let us celebrate the memory of the American singer aka John Walker (John Joseph Maus). Best known as the co founder of the legends “The Walker Brothers”, who would have turned 80 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2011 at the age of 67. They adopted the ‘Walker Brothers’ name as a show business touch even though none of the members were related.
1966 UK No.1 & US No. 13 single ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’.
Brian Hyland
Happy Birthday to Brian Hyland, American rocker born in Queens New York who is turning 80 today. Best known for “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” and “Sealed With a Kiss”.
Brian Hyland performs his 1962 hit, “Sealed With a Kiss” at the Monterey Rock N’ Rod Festival, on Saturday, June 19, 2021. Age 78 and still going strong. Goes to show once again, some people age better than others.
David Hasselhoff – The Passenger
I was baffled when this one showed up in my YouTube recommendations. Is it really the old Iggy Pop classic, one of my all time favourite songs, sung by David Hasselhoff of Baywatch? Of course I had to check it out. Turns out that’s exactly what it is, and lo and behold, it is actually a pretty decent version of the song. Get ready for the darker and grittier side of Baywatch, in black and white.
Not bad at all. A bit heavy (AI) beat compared to the original, but that was 46 years ago.
Bill Morrissey - These Cold Fingers
Let us celebrate the memory of American singer-songwriter Bill Morrissey. who would have turned 72 today if he hadn’t passed away in 2011 aged 59. He is yet another songwriter who seems to be mostly forgotten today.
His career lasted for around 30 years, during which he released 10 albums with his own blend of folk, country, blues and jazz. If you like the song posted here, check him out on YouTube, where several of his albums can be found. Now, in memory of Bill Morrisey, here is These Cold Fingers.
