Just a post to the memory of the American singer, songwriter and guitarist Tony Joe White (1943-2018), who passed away eight years ago today. He wrote songs that became standards, like Polk Salad Annie and Rainy Night In Georgia, as well as two hits for Tina Turner, that is Steamy Windows and Undercover Agent For the Blues.

Tony Joe White also had his own musical career, and I feel his solo work is a little underappreciated. There’s a laidback groove to many of songs that is irresistible. It gets my foot tapping within seconds. To the memory of Tony Joe White, here’s a couple of examples.

Tony Joe White - Love M.D. (1991)

Tuesday night I’m going to a concert by this up and coming kid, supposed to be a bit of a talent with a distinct knack for songwriting. I’m curious if he will live up to the hype. Goes by the name of Bob Dylan but I think that’s just an alias. You guys heard of him?

Happy Birthday to the guitarist Richard Lloyd, who’s turning 75 today. He’s best known as co-founder of the pioneering American new wave band Television in 1973. The band split in 1978, and Richard Lloyd pursued a solo career. This career has been a little on and off, sadly enough because of problems with substances.

Still, it’s an old favourite of mine turning 75 today. Television’s debut album Marquee Moon is one of my all time favourite albums. And Richard Lloyd’s first two solo albums are pretty damn good too.

I’ve seen Richard Lloyd live four times, once on a Television reunion in 1992, and three times solo. The first solo gig is one of my fondest concert memories. It was a magical evening at the legendary (for locals!) Oslo scene Club 7 in 1985, along with around 50 other people. So happy birthday to Richard Lloyd :beer_mug:

Television - Elevation (1977)

Guitar solo by Richard Lloyd

Richard Lloyd - Dying Words (1979)

Unfortunately the lyrics of this last song, written almost 50 years ago, may stand as Richard Lloyd’s final words to the music world. In March earlier this year he was diagnosed with cancer. My best wishes for him :folded_hands:
