Extreme metal, with all its sub-genres, is something I don’t listen to very much. I pass by it now and then, and sometimes like what I hear, sometimes even very much. Still, it’s not really my thing. But for once. let’s delve into it.

Because two days ago it was announced that Conrad Thomas Lant has passed away at the age of 63. He is best known as Cronos, and he was the singer and bass player in the English band Venom. This band was formed in 1978. They became a household name, but never got to be one of the really big bands.

However, Venom is still very much an influential band on the metal scene after 1980. The band played a mix of Motörhead and Sex Pistols, with heavy doses of Black Sabbath added. Members of all of the four greats in thrash metal (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeath) have cited Venom as a major influence. And these are for bands who’s further influenced numerous bands.

If that wasn’t enough, Venom became an influence on black-/death metal too. Hellhammer/Celtic Frost (Switzerland), Mayhem (Norway) and Bathory (Sweden) have named Venom as an inspiration. Venom’s second album Black Metal even gave the genre its name.

Venom - Black Metal (1982)

Cronos originally played rhythm guitar in Venom, but by 1980 he had switched to bass and taken over as lead singer. In 1986 he quit Venom, and formed a band named after himself, Cronos. The classic three-piece of Venom from the early 1980’s then reunited in 1995, and with a few changes the band has been going since then.

Venom’s latest album was released in May this year, and Cronos last gig with the band was in July. Venom might continue, but it’ll be without him. So thank you for the music Cronos, may you be remembered :sign_of_the_horns:
