For some reason I got inspired to have a closer look at a song today. The song is Dedicated To the One I Love, written by Lowman Pauling and Ralph Bass. Pauling (1927-1973) was the guitarist in The “5” Royales, the band who did the original recording of the song, which was a minor hit in the R ‘n’ B charts in the US.

Two years later The Shirelles, a very popular girl vocal group back then, recorded their version of the song. This version peaked at number 83 in the regular US charts. However, The Shirelles re-released the song in 1961, with much better success. The second time around it peaked as high as number 3 in the charts.

The version of the the song that most people are familiar with was released a few years later, when The Mamas & The Papas recorded it. The single peaked at number 2 in the US, the UK and South Africa, number 3 in Canada and it also made the top 10 in a few other countries.

As I said to begin with, for some reason I got inspired. The reason is that the lead singer on The Shirelles version of this song was born 85 years ago today. Her name is Doris Coley. She passed away from breast cancer in 2000 at the age of 58. This post is to her memory

Happy Birthday to the American drummer and record producer, Bryan David Vig, best known as Butch Vig, who is turning 71 today. He co-founded the band Garbage, a very successful band with several high charting singles and albums. The bands self-titled debut album sold over four million copies. One of the bands best known songs is from this album.

As a record producer Butch Vig is best known for producing Nevermind (1991), Nirvana’s second album and one of the best selling and most influential records of the past 30-35 years. The album is often considered to be one of the greatest albums ever. Butch Vig has also produced albums for other well known bands like Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. Here’s a couple of examples of him as a producer.

Brian Johnson got really lucky this weekend in a concert in Las Vegas..
One of the canons they use in the show nearly fell on his head..

Oh shit, that was a close one. Brian Johnson was luckier than singer and guitarist Curtis Mayfield. At a concert in 1990 some of the lighting rig fell down and hit him. He was paralyzed from the neck down, and his health deteriorated in the years to come until he passed away in 1999 at the age of 57.
Still, he did get to make an album before his passing. His vocals was recorded with him lying on his back, and some of the lines were recorded one by one. The title on one of the songs tells what he was feeling those last years.

I’d like to pay tribute to Jeff Conelly, who passed away recently at the age of 69. He was the singer and organ player in the American garage rock band Lyres, who released their debut album in 1984. The band never made any impact commercially, but got pretty popular in the Boston area where they came from. They also got noticed in Europe, due to the garage rock revival there in the 1980’s.
Jeff Conelly moved from the East Coast to California in 1989, and Lyres became less active. Still they continued to play live and release records now and then. Jeff Conelly was the only constant member through these years. The bands last concert was in February this year. Then in March Jeff Conelly announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He passed away at home Friday four days ago.
I had Lyres debut album back in the day, and I remember it was pretty good, albeit a little patchy. Still one of the songs, Help You Ann, has become a garage rock classic. I remember it very well to this day. So here it is, in memory of Jeff Connely. Thank for the music Jeff, may you be remembered

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Hughes announces his retirement from touring and live performances.
Upon his Doctor’s advice, Glenn will have to undergo heart surgery and has made the difficult decision to step back from live performances for the foreseeable future.
“This past year, I’ve had some health issues. The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team, that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority. Grateful to have been chosen with a life full with the gift of music… Thank you for walking beside me.”

he is well known for being the bassplayer of Deep Purple, but he played in multiple other bands, like Black Sabbath, The Dead Daisies, Trapeze and with Joe Satriani etc..

Today was announced that Jerney Kaagman has died on the 31th of juli
She was well know as the singer of Earth and Fire, later on she was member of the jury of the tv show Idols, she was also the first Dutch Celeb who was nude in the Playboy magazine in 1985
she was pretty, but parkinson ruined her body and was the cause of her death aged 79

Huh, this rarely happens anymore. Today I found a David Bowie song that I didn’t know.
Absolute Beginners was a movie to which Bowie contributed the titular song. That’s nothing new. But I’ve never actually seen the film. So Bowie recorded two more songs for this, a cover version of Italian classic “Volare” which plays in the background at some point and then there’s this here.
