Time for a little music history again, because 110 years ago today the American guitarist Charlie Christian was born. He is considered one of the pioneers in jazz, playing bebop and cool jazz, genres later perfected by jazz greats like among others Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
Charlie Christian was also among the very first to use the electric guitar as a solo instrument, making him a pioneer for all lead guitar players to come. No recordings with him as a solo artist or band leader exists, so the later compilations bearing his name consists of him as a member of an orchestra.
Charlie Christian is best know from being the guitarist with Benny Goodman from 1939 until 1941. Sadly his career was short. He passed away from tuberculosis in 1942, only 25 years old. Let us honour the memory of this pioneer in music with a song in our music topic

Happy Birthday to the American blues guitarist and singer Buddy Guy, who is turning 90 today! He started out in local bands in Louisiana in the mid 1950’s, but his career did not take off until he moved to Chicago in 1957 and met Muddy Waters. He played in Muddy Waters’ band and did session work for great blues artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter. He also released a few singles.
After sessions and collaboration albums Buddy Guy’s debut album as a solo artist, was released in 1967. Here’s a track from Left My Blues in San Francisco too start the celebration of his birthday.

When the 1970’s arrived, the music world lost a little interest in blues music. Buddy Guy then co-ran a blues club in Chicago from 1972 until 1985, while playing some live and releasing a couple of albums on the side. However, it wasn’t until the blues revival in the late 1980’s that Buddy Guy’s career really took off. He big breakthrough in the blues mainstream came in 1991 with the album Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues, which got him his first Grammy award.

Since then Buddy Guy has been a household name. He’s been touring, made guest appearences with big names and released several albums. His latest album Ain’t Done with the Blues was released exactly one year ago today. The album earned him his ninth Grammy award.

Buddy Guy’s got every right to say “been there, done that”. We are talking about a career in music spanning 70 years! And believe it or not, he is “still there, doing that”. Buddy Guy’s next concert is tomorrow, and his got four more scheduled for the upcoming week!
Buddy Guy is probably the last of the classic Chicago blues musicians alive. So let concerts be concerts, that’s tomorrow and next week. Today is his birthday! Happy Birthday Buddy
