Happy Birthday to Linda Ronstadt who is turning 80 today! One of the finest voices to come out of the West Coast scene in the late 1960’s into the 70’s. She had huge success in the 70’s, with singles and albums charting high in several countries, some of them as high number 1. She may actually have been the best known female singer in the world back then. That is exactly how big she was.
Howerver, Linda Ronstadt’s first taste of success came as the singer in the band The Stone Ponyes, when the band charted at number 13 in the US with their third single in 1967.

Linda Ronstadt made her her solo debut in 1970, and as mentioned above it was the start of one hit after another. Here’s one of the singles from her debut album. It peaked at number 25 in the US singles charts. Damn what a voice she had back then!
Linda Ronstadt - Long Long Time
Linda Ronstadt started out singing mostly folk/country, but became more pop oriented during the latter part of the 70’s into the 80’s. As the 80’s turned into the 90’s, the commercial success faded a little, but Linda Ronstadt was still a household name on the music scene.
During the years she has collaborated with artists as diverse as Bette Midler, Neil Young and Randy Newman…and Frank Zappa and Phillip Glass! Of course this list includes the biggest country artists too, among others Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris. In 1999 she did a duet album together with the latter, and I’ll include one song from it to conclude the musical part of this post.

In 2011 Linda Ronstadt was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (STP), a neurological disease which is a little similar to Parkisnson’s and Alzheimer’s. This meant she had to retire from music. However, she has remained active on social media, sharing stories from her life in music. So although this remarkable voice is silenced for good, the woman behind it is still with us. Happy Birthday Linda Ronstadt

Here’s to the memory of Ian Curtis of Joy Division, who would have turned 70 today if his life hadn’t ended in such a tragic manner in May 1980. He was the singer on the band’s two albums and handful of singles. Still, that was enough to seal his memory in the history of English rock music, and in rock music in general. To Ian Curtis

Let us celebrate the memory of the Jamaican singer Desmond Adolphus Dacres, better known as Desmond Dekker, who was born 85 years ago today. His career started in Jamaica in the early 1960’s, were he had many hits during the 60’s with his ska and rocksteady. His music also became popular on the mod scene in the UK, where two of his singles charted, one of them at number 1. The song is Israelites, and it became his best known song. It even charted in the US, where it peaked as high as number 9.
Due to his growing popularity in the UK, Desmond Dekker took up permanent residency there in 1969. After a small handful of hits, the commercial success began to fade in the mid 1970’s. After the ska revival in the UK around 1980, he released just a couple of albums. Still he remained a popular live artist for the rest of his life.
Desmond Dekker’s importance is not to underestimated. His hits and live shows in the late 60’s and early 70’s helped paved pave the way and prepare the West for the Jamaican musicians who would go on to much bigger success than him, most noteably Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff.
What better way to celebrate the memory of Demond Dekker than with Israelites. A few years after the single’s first release, it was re-released and peaked at number 10 in the UK. Two times top 10 in the UK, it’s a banger of a song!

Happy Birthday to the American singer Martha Reeves, who is turning 85 today! She is best known as the main singer in Martha & The Vandellas, one of the vocal groups who had great success back in Tamla Motown’s heydays in the 1960’s. Songs like Dancing In the Streets, Heat Wave and Nowhere To Run are classics in pop and rock.
After Martha & The Vandellas split in the early 70’s, Martha Reeves pursued a solo career, which has been less successful. Still, she has established herself as a household name, with albums, live shows and appearances on TV shows and with other artists. Martha & The Vandellas has also reunited several times, in various versions.
Martha & The Vandellas biggest hit was Dancing In the Streets, which peaked at number 2 in the US and number 4 in the UK in 1964. It has been posted twice in our topic already (check it out, it’s a great song), so we might as well turn to the groups second biggest hit, which peaked at number 4 i the US. Martha Reeves is still active. Today’s version of Martha & The Vandellas did five concerts earlier this year. No more live shows seems to be scheduled for now, but it has been announced that a new album is to be released shortly. It’s Martha Reeves’ first new album in 22 years.
I’d like to pay tribute to bassist Jennifer Finch, who passed away yesterday aged 59. She played bass in the all-girl American grunge/punk/metal band L7 from 1986 until 1996 and then again from 2014 until yesterday, when brain cancer sadly ended her life. The cancer was announced monday six days ago, so this came sudden. L7 made this statement on their hopepage yesterday:
With a very heavy heart we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker Jennifer Finch has passed away today. She had a long courageous fight with brain cancer and was loved by many wonderful friends, musical peers and fans worldwide.
L7 can be a little patchy, but when they hit the spot, the band can play some kick ass rock ‘n’ roll. The band is now done with the first leg of their final tour, with a replacement for Jennifer. They may have been hoping for her return, but when they continue the tour later this year it will be without her. As a tribute to her, here’s my favourite L7 song. So thank you for the music Jennifer, may you be remembered.
