Here’s one to the memory of the Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist Grant McLennan (1958-2006), who passed away from a heart attack 20 years ago today. He was one of the songwriters in the indie pop/rock band The Go-Betweens, a band who had some considerable success on the indie scene from the early 1980’s to McLennan’s passing.
Like many indie bands The Go-Betweens could ba a little patchy. But when they had their moments, they were really good. Here’s an example of that, written by Grant McLennan. To his memory ![]()
The Go-Betweens - Finding You (2005)
This song is an old favourite of mine. I was in my mid 40’s when it was released, and hearing it for the first time back then made me feel almost like a teengaer again. The best pop music gives you that feeling. And I’m still blown away by the opening lines in the song. It’s poetry, in a song.
What would you do if you turned around
And saw me beside you
Not in a dream but in a song?
Would you float like a phantom
Or would you sing along?
Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force - Planet Rock (Videoclipe oficial)
I noticed that Afrika Bambaataa passed away about a month ago at the age of 68. Back then I thought about doing a tribute to him, but I didn’t get around to it. Partly because this style of music isn’t really a big thing for me, and partly because…well, I just can’t get them all.
Still, Afrika Bambaataa was a pioneer in the history of modern popular music. He was one of the originators of breakbeat DJing, making him an important figure in the development of what was to become hip-hop and rap, the most popular music genre there is today.
So I think he is well worth a mention in our music topic. Now he’s got it! I’ll just leave it at that, and let Amoz’ post right above this post be a tribute to the memory of Afrika Bambaataa ![]()
After the passing of Neil Peart , Rush’s drummer, most people thought that the band would stop.
It is not the case, they found a very good substitute who is aware that she has big shoes to fill, but she is doing a good job!
Anika Nilles is her name
It’s time for some music history again. When checking for anniversaries and what-nots today, as I do most days, I came upon one that I find really intersting. There was a lady by the name of Mary Elfrieda Scruggs born 116 years ago today. She is known professionally as Mary Lou Williams, and was a pianist and composer working in the field of jazz.
Although Mary Lou Williams is mostly forgotten today, she worked and had connections with some of the biggest names in jazz history. She wrote and arranged songs for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. She was teacher, mentor and friend of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie. These are all huge names in jazz! In addition she released over 20 albums on her own.
Mary Lou Williams had a poor background. She was a child prodigy, who could pick out simple tunes on the piano already at the age of two. At seven she was performing in public, and as we can see above, she honed her skills very well after this. In her later years she reflected: “I did it, didn’t I? Through muck and mud.” Mary Lou Williams passed away from cancer in 1981 at the age of 71. Here’s to her memory ![]()
Mary Lou Williams, with Dizzy Gillespie & Bobby Hackett - Autumn Leaves (live, 1971)
Autumn Leaves is of course and old standard, and I can’t end this post witout a song actually written by Mary Lou Williams. The song is sung by another of the biggest names in jazz history, or for that matter, in music history in general.

Dammit, how come I’ve never seen this video before?
I discovered David Bowie through the 1996 WDR Rockpalast broadcast of David Bowie at the Lorelei Festival. So his '95 Outside album was the first I bought, and my first step to becomming a massive Bowie fan. Maybe my gravitating back towards that Lorelei show is the reason I’ve never seen this show before.
This link goes to the last two songs of a 1 hour show, but I recommend checking out the other songs, too, particularly Under Pressure. Anyway, I love the soundmix here. To be played at maximum volume.
You have crisp definition on all instruments, and the director does a very good job picking up on all the musical cues. Pay a bit of attention to the man at the piano (keyboard), Mike Garson.
Hallo Spaceboy can be a bit of a cacophonic mess. The Pet Shop Boys version has its merits, but I’ve always preferred the album version. And I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a better live video of it. This absolutely rocks.
Strangers When We Meet is the perfect closing song to the Outside album. It’s a very dark and gritty concept album, like sinking into an abyss and Strangers is the relief at the end. It’s like the sun breaking through after a thunderstorm. Love this rendition.
I was deeply impressed with Outside album and one thing I liked in particular was Mike Garson’s piano work here. Little did I know at the time that Garson was a veteran Bowie collaborator. Imagine my joy as, working my way back through all of Bowie’s albums, at some point I arrived at his piano solo in Aladdin Sane. It’s something, isn’t it?
The English singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Mason would have turned 80 today, if he hadn’t passed away on Sunday three weeks ago. I didn’t get around to make a tribute for him then, and now seems to be an appropriate time to get to it.
Dave Mason is best known as a co-founder of Traffic, a classic rock band from the 1960’s and 70’s. He only stayed with the band for their first two albums, and he wrote a couple of their best known songs. After leaving Traffic, he pursued a solo career, and also worked with among others Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and Eric Clapton.
Dave Mason’s solo career never took him to the stars. Still, his five first albums (one with Cass Elliott of The Mamas & The Papas) all charted in the top 50 in the US, the highest at 22. He has released 16 studio and seven live albums, and has been doing concerts up until 2024. So it was an experienced and highly respected musician who left us three weeks ago.
Dave Mason’s best known song is called Feelin’ Alright. Grand Funk Railroad had a minor hit with it in 1971, but the best known version of the song is most probably by Joe Cocker. So what better way to celebrate the memory of Dave Mason, than listen to his own version of this song, taken from Traffic’s self-titled second album. Thank you for the music Dave, may you be remembered ![]()
Traffic - Feelin’ Alright (1968)
While we’re at it, one more song by Dave Mason, this one taken from his solo debut.
Dave Mason - Only You Know And I Know (1970)
Donovan is turning 80 today! Happy Birthday to him ![]()
Donovan - Mellow Yellow (1966)
Donovan - Sunshine Superman (1966)
Just a little trivia to end with, the woman in the last video is the American actress Sue Lyon (1946-2019), who had a short relationship with Donovan around 1966.
Thank you GladNGrumpy for providing all the insights into the history of the Bands and Artists that you provide, I find the biographies fascinating . ![]()
There’s one more Happy Birthday greeting today, and once again it’s to a musician who’s turning 80! This one is for Graham Gouldman. He’s best known as co-founder, bass player and one of the singers and songwriters in the English band 10cc, a band who had some big success in the UK and Europe in the 1970’s and into the 80’s.
However, Graham Gouldman’s career in music started already in the 1960’s, when he worked as a songwriter. He penned several hits, among others For Your Love and Heart Full of Soul for The Yardbirds, Bus Stop for The Hollies and No Milk Today for Herman’s Hermits.
To celebrate his birthday, here he is singing a song not written by himself, but by Lol Creme and Kevin Godley, also of 10cc. Happy Birthday to Graham Gouldman ![]()
10ccc - The Film of My Love (1975)
Graham Goulman has actually kept versions of 10cc going. The latest version of the band have concerts scheduled until February next year. Former 10cc drummer and singer Kevin Godley has also been briefly involved in this in later years.
Thanks to you too, iain. I’m so glad when I hear this little hobby of mine is appreciated by some of you guys. I guess this is just a way of living out my old dream of becoming a journalist ![]()
