April W i n e - Say Hello
I’d like to pay tribute to the American songwriter and singer James Wesley Voight, better known as Chip Taylor. He passed away Monday this week, two days after turning 86. Although he had a career as a recording and live artist, he is best known for songs performed by others.
What may be Chip Taylor’s three best known songs are Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) (as co-writer) by Janis Joplin, Angel of the Morning (recorded by several artists, the biggest hit was by Juice Newton in 1981) and last, but most certainly not least, Wild Thing. This last song has been covered by numerous artists. The best known versions is The Troggs’ smash hit in 1966 and Jimi Hendrix’s iconic performance of the song at the Montery Festival in 1967 (when he set fire to his guitar).
I will celebrate the memory of Chip Taylor with a small handful of songs from the later years of his career, this time sung by himself. Thank you for the songs Chip, may you be remembered ![]()
(Just a few words about the first song. I posted it a month ago, but it somehow feels right to post it again. I mean, with forum member who know everything that’s going on in (and outside!) the apartments and with both media and social media overflowing with people telling how you should look, think and act. Yeah, all those perfect people) ![]()
Chip Taylor & The New Ukrainians - Fuck All the Perfect People (2011)
Chip Taylor - The Last Video (Fuck All the Perfect People Part II) (2013)
Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez - Who’s Gonna Build That Wall (2016)
I thought many it would be appropriate to include Chip Taylor’s own versions of his best known songs. However, I can’t seem to find that he recorded all of them. So I may need another approach here.
Janis Joplin - Try (Just A little Bit Harder) (live at Woodstock 1969)
I can’t find that Chip Taylor recorded or played this, so Janis will have to do.
Chip Taylor - Angel of the Morning (1972)
Chip Taylor did actually record this song. Being a little heavy on the strings arrangement, it’s not the best version of the song I’ve heard. Still, this is how the songwriter himself did it back in the day.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Wild Thing (Live at Montery 1967)
Chip Taylor did not record Wild Thing himself, although he played it live. There are decent clips on YouTube with him doing the song, but since it seems Hendrix’s legendary Montery perfomance is not in the topic…now it’s here ![]()
This Hendrix clip is rock history! It’s an epic performance, and you can see Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas and Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees in the audience.
Chip Taylor & The Grandkids - Little Angel Wings (2017)
Bear with me, I got a little carried away with Chip Taylor today. So I just want to share this lovely tribute to coaches everywhere
Lennon had originally written the song for Ringo Starr and his album Stop and Smell the Roses, but after John’s death, Ringo decided not to record the song.
Instead, it was released on the posthumous album “Milk and Honey” in 1984. The album contains recordings that John Lennon and Yoko Ono had made shortly before his death in 1980.
“Nobody Told Me” was the first single released from the album and became an international hit.
since you mentioned John Lennon, i have a song that many people covered and one of them was Lennon
First the original
then one of the most famous versions
Wanda Jackson was known for using a lot of the same songs that Elvis did
Dave Berry did it also
not well known, but cannot do without them
and my personal favorite
Jeffrey Allen “Skunk” Baxter (born December 13, 1948) is an American guitarist, known for his stints in the rock bands Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers

One more “nobody” with a long career in music has left us, and I’d like to give him a mention in our topic. So here is my tribute to the American guitarist, songwriter and singer Jon Dee Graham, who passed away Friday last week at the age of 67. He was a part of the American alternative music scene, and as such best known from punk/new wave band The Skunks and alt. country rock band True Believers.
As a session man, Jon Dee Graham played with more known artists, among others John Hiatt, Lone Justice, Kelly Willis, James McMurty and Patty Griffin. He also released 14 solo albums through the years. In spite of no commercial success, Jon Dee Graham did not give up and kept his career going for almost 50 years. So here’s to his memory. Thank you for the music Jon, may you be remembered ![]()
True Believers - Lucky Moon (1986)
I still have the LP I got back in the day. It’s a little patchy, but the best songs are really good. Jon Dee Graham wrote this one.
Jon Dee Graham - Something To Look Forward To (2004)
I am not familiar with Jon Dee Graham’s solo career. After checking briefly, it seems to be a little hit and miss. Still some very fine songs, like this one. Perhaps it’s due time for a more thorough investigation ![]()
Ok, when I didn’t get any of the eight first, I gave up. Bloody hell, I didn’t have a clue ![]()
Wow I expected you to ace this ![]()

Yeah, I generally suck at these type of party games, whatever they’re about. Something about them I don’t get ![]()
On the other hand, give me sound ![]()
