What's the best song you have heard today?

It’s time to celebrate the memory of one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll guitar playing. The American guitarist Paul Burlison (1929-2003) was born 97 years ago today. He was a member of The Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio from 1951 until 57. Also known by other names. the band had success on the live circuit, but the few records they released did not do much in the charts.

Still, some of the songs The Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio did record have become standards in rock music, covered by the likes of The Beatles, The Yardbids, Aerosmith, The Cramps and Motörhead.

After the split Paul Burlison retired from music. He started a family and ran a small company in electricity for over 20 years. Then in the early 1980’s he retuned to music and was part of a few rock ‘n’ roll revival bands in the years to come. In 1997 he released his only solo album, with guests from bands like The Band, Los Lobos, The Staple Singers and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Many guitarists have cited Paul Burlison as one of their influences, among them “the Holy Trinity” from the British Blues Boom (Beck, Clapton and Page). In 2003 Paul Burlison passed away afte a long battle with cancer. To his memory, here is what may be the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio’s best known song :beer_mug:

Q’65 is a dutch band that started in 1965 in the Hague
They had some nice hits, alltough never in the USA or UK as far as I know,
Although they did try, they traveled to London by dinghy, where they were denied work permits and returned after a few interviews. The return trip was also supposedly by dinghy, but it was only used a few kilometers off the Scheveningen coast. Thirty thousand fans welcomed them.

Here are two songs of them

Q’65 - You’re The Victor

Q’65 - The life I live

Wow, that’s a solid 1960’s band. I am actually a little familiar with Q65. I got them in my shelves, somewhere on a compilation. This reminded me of another Dutch band I’ve been giving some listens.

Last week I did a post on the bassist James Jamerson, who were part of The Funk Brothers, a loose term for Tamla Motown’s house band in the 1960’s and 70’s. The Funk Brothers were located in Chicago. If we move west to Los Angeles, we’ll find a similar collective of session musicians called The Wrecking Crew. It was drummer Hal Blaine who came up with this name.

As it happens, Hal Blaine (1929-2019) was born 97 years ago today, so this post is to his memory. If you’ve never heard his name before, I can guarantee that you’ve heard his drums. He is one of the most recorded musicians ever. It is estimated that he played on around 6000 singles. 150 of them made the top 10 in the charts, 40 at number 1.

Hal Blaine’s drums can be heard on records by Elvis Presley (A Little Less Conversation), The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations), The Byrds (Mr. Tambourine Man), Frank Sinatra (Strangers In the Night), Simon & Garfunkel (Bridge Over Troubled Water), Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction), The Mamas & the Papas (California Dreamin’) and…that is just a select few of the best known. Several of these songs are already posted in this topic.

Obviously Hal Blaine was a busy man, and pehaps that’s why he very rarely appered live. The exceptions being as drummer in the bands of Nancy Sinatra and John Denver. Towards the end of the 1970’s producers was beginning to look for younger session musicians. In addition drum machines was becoming more and more popular. So when Hal Blaine became less in demand, he kept busy for awhile recording jingles for advertising, before retiring more and more from the music industry.

Hal Blaine passed away from natural causes in 2019, at the age of 90. With all the classics he played on, it’s hard to choose a song or two to celebrate his memory. So I might as well settle for these. To Hal Blaine’s memory :beer_mug:

The Ronettes - Be My Baby (1963)

Max Weinberg, drummer in Bruce Springsteens’s E-Street Band, is quoted saying this: “If Hal Blaine had played drums only on … “Be My Baby”, his name would still be uttered with reverence and respect for the power of his big beat

Glen Campbell - Galveston (1969)

By the way, Glen Campbell was also part of The Wrecking Crew, as a guitarist. It is often forgotten that in addition to being a good singer, he was also a very skilled guitar player.

Let us not forget the American singer and songwriter Barrett Strong (1941-2023), who was born 85 years ago today. Together with Norman Whitfield, he wrote songs like I Heard It Through the Grapevine (Marvin Gaye and CCR), War (Edwin Starr) and Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone (The Temptations). As a singer he is basically known for just one song. But it is a classic! Cheers to Barrett Strong’s memory :beer_mug:
