Moloko - Sing It Back
Today I feel for a little trip down the nooks and crannies of rock history. So here we go!
The Mynah Birds were a Canadian band which lasted from 1964 to 67. The band never released any records, but is still worth mentioning because in its various incarnations it had members who went on to have sucessful careers, among them two of the original members of Steppenwolf.
Now, let us focus on the best known version of The Mynah Birds. In early 1966, they got a record deal with Tamla Motown, and a few tracks were recorded and a single was planned. The singer then was a black American guy, who had moved to Canada to avoid military service. Right after the recordings, the US authorities got hold of him and he was put in custody. Motown then dropped The Mynah Birds, and the single remained unreleased until Record Store Day in 2012.
The black American singer’s name was Rick James. He spent a few months in prison, and then went on to pursue his music career again. And success was to come his way. He became a big star in the funk and RnB world in the 1970’s and 80’s, with many hits in several countries. Rick James passed away in 2004, and yesterday he would have turned 78. Here’s what may be his best known song. It’s a banger of a funky and catchy pop song.
Rick James - Super Freak (1981)
So what about the other members of this version of The Mynah Birds then? Two of them, guitarist Neil Young and bassist Bruce Palmer, made their way to Los Angeles. When they arrived there, they soon met Stephen Stills and Richie Furay. Along with drummer Dewey Martin, the four of them soon formed a band, calling themselves Buffalo Springfield. The band already had their first single out by the end of 1966.
Buffalo Springfield - Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing (1966)
As they say, the rest is history. After Buffalo Springfield we got Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Poco and a few prolific careers as solo artists. That especially goes for Neil Young, who’s become one of the biggest names in rock history. Well, about history and The Mynah Birds then? How did they sound? Let’s find out.
The Mynah Birds - It’s My Time (1966)
Well, it’s not a great classic. Still, it is a pleasant listen and an interesting time piece for those of us who love music from this era. One final thought, what if the US military hadn’t caught up with Rick James, and this version The Mynah Birds had continued? How great could they have gotten? There most certainly was talent within in the band. History has proven that!
Speaking about, it’s Happy Birthday to Graham Nash! He’s turning 84 today ![]()
The Hollies - Postcard (1967)
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Teach Your Children (1970)

Once upon a time I did actually write a sort of school paper turned into some sort of novel thing about Jimi Hendrix. Pretty cool. ![]()
Thirty Seconds To Mars - The Kill (Bury Me) (2006)

Happy Birthday to John Steel, the original drummer in The Animals, who is turning 85 today ![]()
The Animals - Bright Lights, Big City (1965)
Believe it or not, at 85 John Steel is still active. With him as the only original member, the current incarnation of The Animals played in London about a month ago, and has a handful of gigs scheduled in Sweden and Germany later this year.
