What's the best song you have heard today?

Gary Moore - Hey Joe (live 2007)

Excellent version of this old calssic, made popular by Jimi Hendrix. What makes this clip a little special, is that Gary Moore (1952-2011) is backed by two musicians that actually played with Hendrix, namely Billy Cox (1941- ) on bass and Mitch Mitchell (1946-2008) on drums. Today Billy Cox is the only surviving musician who regularly playd with Hendrix.

Die Prinzen - Deutschland

The song ironically addresses the national pride of some Germans by exaggerating it and sarcastically portraying all that Germany is.

Translation

German
German
German, German, German, German

Of course a German has “Wetten, dass..?” Invented
Thank you for the wonderful hours
We are the friendliest customers in the world
We are humble, we have money
The very best in every sport
The taxes here are a world record
Travel to Germany and stay here
We are waiting for these kinds of visitors
Anyone who likes it can live here
We are the friendliest people in the world
(German, German, German, German)
Only one small thing is wrong here
And that is that Schumacher doesn’t drive a Mercedes [The song dates back to the time when Michael Schumacher was active in Formula 1.]

This is all Germany, this is all us
You won’t find this anywhere else, only here, only here
This is all Germany, this is all us
We live and we die here

(German, German, German, German
German, German, German, German)

Many people think they’re something special about Germany
And some think it’s cool to be an asshole
There are some who like to complain about foreigners
And go to Thailand every year to have sex
We love our cars more than our women
Because we can Trust
God only kissed the earth once
Right on this spot where Germany is now
We’re the best at everything, including in bed
And especially nice to dogs and cats

This is all Germany, this is all us
You won’t find this anywhere else, only here, only here (two, three, four!)
This is all Germany, this is all us
We live and we die here

We’re especially good at punching each other in the face
You can trust us at setting fires too
We value order and cleanliness
We’re always ready for war
Greetings to the world, finally get it
We can be proud of Germany (Germany, Germany…)

(Pig, pig, pig, pig
Pig, pig, pig, pig)

This is all Germany, this is all us
You won’t find this anywhere else, only here, only here
This is all Germany, this is all us
We live and we die here
This is all Germany, this is all us
You won’t find this anywhere else, only here, only here (two, three, four)
This is all Germany, this is all us.
We live and we die here.

… and by that pointing out, that some Germans think that they are more than they really are.

I think the band wanted to display, that Germany is also “only cooking with water”.

In the current political situation world-wide, I think the song wouldn’t have been published nowadays.

The tendency to perceive oneself as superior and more important than the rest of the world is a trend currently found in many countries. In Germany, however, one is (still…?) allowed to make fun of it…

What things will look like after the next election… we’ll find out. When the targets of this satire suddenly come to power, many things change… and not for the better.

You’re really stupid.
That’s why you’re doing so well.
Hate is your attitude.
Your blood is always boiling.
Everything has to be explained to you,
Because you really don’t know anything!

Most likely not even what attitude means!

Your violence is just a silent cry for love.
Your combat boots yearn for tenderness.
You never learned to express yourself.
And your parents never had time for you…

Ohohoh ASSHOLE!!!

Why are you afraid of being caressed?
What’s all the fuss about?
Under the laurel wreath with acorns,
I know your heart beats!
And romance is for you
Not just abstract theory…
Between Störkraft and the Böhse Onkelz [2 bands that are associated with the right-wing scene]
There’s a soft rock LP…

Your violence is just a silent cry for love.
Your combat boots yearn for tenderness.
You never learned to express yourself. And your parents never had time for you!

Oh, oh, ASSHOLE!!!

Because you have problems,
that no one cares about.
Because you’re scared of cuddling,
you’re a fascist!
You don’t have to project your self-hatred onto others.
So no one notices what a nice guy you are.

Oh, oh…

Your violence is just a silent cry for love.
Your combat boots yearn for tenderness.
You never learned to express yourself.
And your girlfriend never has time for you.

Oh, oh, ASSHOLE, ASSHOLE, ASSHOLE!!!

I remember some 15 to twenty years back in time. Back at the time there was a legitimate thing to make humouristic programs on telly making pretty severe jokes about the war and so on and plus more. Also for example in Norway Today it is absolutely silence when it comes to making such things and anything at all about such stuff. Absolute silence about it both on radio and TV. Also in Norway. This is just how it is.

I’d like to pay tribute to the American guitarist Steve Cropper, who passed away yesterday at the age of 84. He is a big name in the history of soul, R ‘n’ B and rock. In the early 1960’s he started out in The Mar-Kays, a band who evolved into Booker T. & The MGs, and become the house band for Stax Records. The band played on records and live with artists like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Sam & Dave, to mention a few. During those years Steve Cropper was pivotal in shaping what became known as the Stax Sound, or the Memphis Sound, in soul music.

Booker T. & The MGs also had some considerable success releasing records on their own. Several of their singles charted, the best known being Green Onions. After The MGs broke up around 1971, Steve Cropper has been very busy. He has played with a shitload of artist, like John Lennon, Rod Stewart, Paul Simon and Dolly Parton, just to mention a select few of the best known. In addition he has been a member of The Origial Blues Brothers Band, and there’s been many Booker T. & The MGs reunions.

So the man who left us yesterday has a big name in the annals of modern popular music. Still, to most people he is probably best remembered as the guitarist in Booker T. & The MGs. The band’s signature song is the already mentioned Green Onions. I may have posted the song twice already in this topic. However, it’s still the grooviest song ever, and today it’s all about the memory of Steve Cropper. So here is Green Onions once again. Thank you for the music Steve, may you be remembered :wine_glass:

Booker T. & The MGs - Green Onions (live 1967)

I got to see Steve Cropper live once, when Booker T. & The MGs was Neil Young’s backing band on a festival here in Norway in 1993.

About Steve Cropper, I forgot to mention that he co-wrote two songs that are staples in the canon of…well, songs. These two songs are…

Wilson Pickett - In the Midnight Hour (1965)

Otis Redding - (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay (alternative take, 1967)

I’d like to pay tribute to the Japanese bass player Tetsu Yamauchi, who passed away two days ago at the age of 79. He played bass in the Japanese band Samurai, who got some attention when they made two albums and toured Europe in the early 1970’s.

Samurai - Green Tea (1970)

This led to Tetsu getting some session work in London. He got to know people, and ended up replacing Andy Fraser as the bassist in Free for their last album. Then around the time Free broke up, Ronnie Lane quit The Faces and this became Tetsu’s next gig.

The Faces, with Keith Richards - Sweet Little Rock and Roller (live ca. 1974)

When The Faces broke up in 1975, he got some session work in England for the rest of the 70’s, before moving back home to Japan. In Japan there was more session work, and a few local Japanese bands, before Tetsu retired from the music industry in 1991. He moved to the countryside, allegedly dismissing being a rock musician as “juvenile and vain”. However he made a brief return to music, doing some concerts in 2023.

Last year when Tetsu turned 78, someone posted this tribute on YouTube. The song is Wishing Well by Free, with Tetsu on bass.
