Five days ago I posted about a guy named Jerry Miller, lead guitarist and singer in the sadly forgotten 1960’s band Moby Grape. He would have turned 80 then. As it happens, today it’s 80 years ago since another member of this band was born, namely rhythm guitarist and singer Peter Lewis. And he is still alive.
So to celebrate Peter Lewis’ birthday, here’s a song written by him, taken from Moby Grape’s classic self-titled debut album (1967). Happy Birthday to Peter Lewis
Moby Grape - Fall On You (1967)
Peter Lewis has also released four solo albums between 1995 and 2023. Curiosity got the best of me, and I checked out the latest. And it appears to be a pretty decent album. I’d like to share a song from it here, so here’s one more for Peter Lewis.
I’ve been on a journy a few meters further up and heard a lot of the good old songs. This is a bit newer.
Rap isn’t really my kind of music, but I like these songs.
My German brain doesn’t translate anything while i hear music unless I trigger it myself. I found for the most of the Nelly songs a lyrics version. Don’t blame me for the text.
here are three of them
for our metal fans…
if you have not seen yet or not been there…i just watched Judas Priest at ‘Hellfest 2025’ on Arte TV.
Most songs from their album Painkiller. Damn good gig.
It’s just a shame it’s already midnight. I don’t have a house like the people who had the container ship visit (‘you must have seen’ topic 22.May).
I found on utube not Arte but also full concert.
‘ARTE Concert’ has a bunch of other gigs from that festival on utube.
the set list from ARTE
All Guns Blazing
Hell Patrol
You’ve Got Another Thing Comin‘
Breaking the Law
A Touch of Evil
Night Crawler
One Shot at Glory
Gates of Hell
Between the Hammer and the Anvil
The Serpent and the King
Giants in the Sky
Painkiller
Hell Bent for Leather
Living After Midnight
edit:
why only utube? i’m watching it in mediathek today with the right volume sound is also better than that one on utube. and no commercials. You can choose language (of course not for the songs ) and you find all the other gigs there. TOP place for that festival! available until june/july 2026.
i recommend Lorna Shore, Jinjer and Shaârghot so far. It’s gonna be a long hardcore day today until the neighbors complain.
I just found out that today it’s 100 years since the American singer James Victor Scott was born. He’s better known as Jimmy Scott, or sometimes Little Jimmy Scott. He was born with Kallman syndrom, a rare genetic disorder that prevents growth, hence the nickname Little Jimmy. He was only 150 cm tall up until he was 37, when he suddenly grew 20 cm. No more Little Jimmy.
The syndrome also prevented him from going through puberty in the classic sense, so he was left with a rather high pitched and boyish voice for the rest of his life. Now Jimmy Scott had talent to use that voice for singing, and with his distinct voice he had big success in the US in the 1940’s and 50’s. During the 1960’s the times they were a changing, and Jimmy Scott’s success faded and he returned to doing odd jobs in his hometown Cleveland.
Then in 1989 Jimmy Scott returned to music, when he said yes to appear as a guest in a revival concert. This led tor renewed interest in him, and to backing vocals on a Lou Reed album, a song on the soundtrack album to the movie “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” and a record deal. To put it shortly, Jimmy Scott’s career got a revival, which he enjoyed up until he passed away in 2014.
Jimmy Scott is an artist I’ve heard a lot about, but never really listened to. So tonight I decided to listen some, while keeping one eye on the shenanigans that’s going on here. And I have to say, this guy could sing. Allow me to share two examples of that here.
“I’m dri-nking water tonight, cause I drank all the whisk** this morning”
…well, fortunately I’m not there, in spite of all my rants on the forum. Howevver, Jim Beam is about to leave the building now, and I’ll follow shortly after
Friend, I’m in the city of Porto and I’m very happy to see for the first time a band that has been active for more years than I’ve been alive “SCORPIONS”, simply wonderful.
Happy Birthday to Bernie Leadon, who is turning 78 today. He was a member of the original Eagles, and he wrote and sang a few songs on their first four albums. The country and bluegrass inspiration that is obvious on the early Eagles albums, is often credited to him.
As the Eagles were moving away from country rock towards more mainstream rock, Bernie Leadon became a little frustrated and quit the band in 1975. The Eagles went on to become the mega big brand they are today, while he went on to a solid yet low-key career as a session musician, as part of various projects and some solo work.
One of the songs Bernie Leadon wrote and sang for the Eagles is the beutiful Train Leaves Here This Morning. Happy Birthday to Bernie Leadon
Just so you know, Bernie Ledon can play som pretty fine guitar too. Just check out the video with the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, which I posted four days ago.
I expected Queen today…Brian Harold May, 19. Juli 1947.
Lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the rock band Queen.
I’m not really fan of Queen. Once on a motobike meeting in a big tent (bigger than this) with wooden floor and with tables and benches like this in the back half
a cover band came on stage and started with: you want music…make music…
and the singer stamped his foot on the floor and clapped, a few times until hundreds of bikers did the same…
i guess you know the song.
Queen - We Will Rock You
Funny you should mention that, because neither am I. No doubt they are an important band in rock history, and they are fantastic musicians, but for some reason Queen has never clicked with me. I like some of their songs. Bohemian Rhapsody is epic! And among the other songs I like is actually one sung by our birthday boy. So let’s have one more for Brian May. Happy Birthday
here is a little mix of the old times and the new times for our metal fans:
Leo Moracchioli,
this guy does every song in a metal version…i guess including baby lullabies.
i had to wake up (very) early today for the gardener and i’m waiting now for them coming back. and heard a bit older and softer material than metal…
Steamhammer - Junior’s Wailing
Ray Charles & ZZ Top & Norman Greenbaum - Hit the Road Jack! (Music - La Grange & Spirit In The Sky)
