Yes, that is correct. Angelina Jordan was quite the sensation here in Norway when she appeared back then, seven years old. And she is still going strong, as you are probably aware of. Damn fine voice!

Time to give a mention a fine musician who seems to be a little forgotten these days, namely the English keyboard player Ian McLagan (1945-2014). Today it is 80 years since he was born. He had his time in the spotlight with the Small Faces in the 1960’s and then in the Faces in the 70’s, together with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood.

After the Faces split up in 1975, Ian McLagan had a solo career, with records and touring. He also did a lot session work, and a as a member of touring bands. The list is long, among the artists he worked with is the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Chuck Berry and Bruce Springsteen, just to mention a few of the best known.

Ian McLagan was active all the way up to his death in 2014. Here’s a solid rocker from his debut album Troublemaker from 1979. To Ian McLagan’s memory :wine_glass:

Let us celebrate the memory of the English guitarist and singer Danny Kirwan (1950-2018). He would have turned 75 today. When he was 18, he joined the original Fleetwood Mac. Along with Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, he became their third guitarist. His first recording with the band was Albatross. As Peter Green said later: “Once we got Danny in, it was plain sailing. I would never have done Albatross if it wasn’t for Danny. I would never have had a number one hit record.”

Here’s Danny singing and playing some fine guitar together with Peter Green.

Fleetwood Mac - Like It This Way

Unfortunately all three guitarists in the early Fleetwood Mac were troubled souls. In 1970 Green was the first to leave the band. In 1971 it was Spencer’s turn. Danny Kirwan stayed in Fleetwood Mac in the beginning of the Bob Welch era. However, his fragile and unstable personaltity eventually became too much for the rest of the band and he was sacked in 1972. Mick Fleetwood later said: " I was loath to fire him because he played so well."

Here’s a song written and sung and by Danny, from after Christine McVie and Bob Welch joined the band.

Fleetwood Mac - Dragonfly

Of the three guitarists in early Fleetwood Mac, Danny Kirwan’s story is the saddest. Both Green and Spencer did somehow manage to pull themselves together. Danny Kirwan did not. After being sacked, he released a small handful of solo albums, before he disappeared from the music business for good in 1979. His mental health, along with alco-hol and drugs was getting the best of him.

During parts the 1980’s and 90’s Danny Kirwan endured periods of homelessness, sleeping in parks or hostels for the homeless. In 2000 he was settled in a care home for alcoholics, where he lived until his death in 2018. People who visited him during those years, reports that he was taken good care of and seemed to be doing pretty well, all things considered. It’s no happy ending to his story, but at least Danny Kirwan got a few years of a somewhat decent life before he passed away.

I will end this long rant with one of my favourite songs. I raise my glass to the memory of the man who wrote and sang the song below. To Danny Kirwan :wine_glass:

Here’s one to the memory of the excellent American singer and songwriter Mickey Newbury (1940-2002), who was born 85 years ago today. Although he had some moderate success in his solo career, he is probably best known as a songwriter, writing songs that became hits for among others, Elvis Presley, Kenny Rogers and Tom Jones.

In 1968 four songs written by Mickey Newbury were in the top 5 of four different US charts the same week; number 5 in the pop/rock chart and number 1 in the Easy Listening, the R & B and the country charts. This is the only time this has happened. In addition, he inspired great songwriters such as Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark and John Prine.

Mickey Newbury’s best known song is probably An American Trilogy, a song that became a staple in the repertoire of Elvis Presley’s later career. To the memory of Mickey Newbury, here is his own version of the song :wine_glass:
