Like the others i have never heard ‘squares’’ used for cigarettes, but thought i would point out there was another very old meaning of the word fag.
In British 'Public Schools '( effectively the private boys schools like Harrow and Eton , the sixth formers (17 year olds) would have 1st year boys (11 year olds) as almost a servant , running errands etc and these were called fags . There are many old story books where boys would discuss beating their fags. i guess set around the 1940s Billy Bunter is the name that springs to mind.
Come to think of it and now you mention it, that is vaguely familiar.

Hi everyone.
Just to let you all know that Artem had a skateboarding accident earlier today. He has broken both his arms, and as you can see he is in a lot of pain. He has been to the hospital.
Molly has just arrived at his apartment to help look after him.
