If left alone, they suffer from separation anxiety.

Yes, if the owners go away for a few days, someone needs to stop by once a day to check on the pet: to ensure it has food and water, clean the litter box, and spend at least 30 minutes interacting with the pet.
However, it would be preferable if a friend could take the pet into their own home for that time. Ares handles strangers and changes in environment quite well; this would not be a source of significant stress for him.

It keeps meowing nonstop. There are participants who read the forums, so someone should react. I’ve never seen this level of irresponsibility.

Cats are good if you are around a lot.
I have 2 (used to have 3), and I had to go to the hospital for 2 weeks a few years ago; my sister came every day to feed them. Every time she did, one of them slept on my office chair every night, obviously missing me.
Even though they can fend for themselves, they need interaction. Plus, they need time to familiarise themselves with new surroundings.
