If you try to communicate in Russian … familiarize yourself with the “politeness” and “you” variant of the language. 
An example of “ПРИВЕТ” as a hello is allowed/ok among known and young people.
However, if you address Fox’s parents like that, I think you’ve lost, and I wouldn’t address police officers like that either.
Here you use the polite form " ЗДРАВСТВУЙТЕ"
So better try it in English, it’s easier with the forms here.

it was just not a little joke about the fact that in Russian you can very quickly put your foot in your mouth with the language variants …

I’ll put it diplomatically here. St. Petersburg is considered the cultural (capital) city of Russia.
Moscow is the political capital.
There are, of course, linguistic differences, but I’m not going to get into the fire here and judge them.
Even though I know where Fox lives at the moment.
