The FIA has announced that the additional bonus point which was handed to the driver with the fastest lap in a Formula 1race will be removed from the 2025 season.
The bonus point was introduced in 2019 as an attempt to avoid races being dull in the closing laps when the gaps between the points-contending cars are spread out.
However, it hasn’t had a marked impact on the spectacle as the point has tended to go to the driver within the top teams who retains the gap behind to make a pit stop.
The topic was discussed at the latest meeting of the World Motor Sport Council, which concluded with the decision to abolish the regulation at the end of this season.

I don’t think it will have any major consequences for the whole World Cup.
I don’t know of any figures or statistics that show what percentage of the fastest race lap always goes to the top ten drivers. The figure is certainly very high.
Only the smaller and weaker teams always have the chance to score points. Because their chances of always finishing in the top ten are permanently very low in normal races.
And we know that every championship point also means money, so I wouldn’t abolish this rule. Because, as I said before, this championship point doesn’t make much difference in the end, I would think.
Even if it is 24 points in 24 races. But I wouldn’t say that one team has all the fastest laps. Instead, it’s at least spread across the top ten and the chance for smaller teams remains.

I don’t think it changes anything really in races, it was meant to provide better races and drivers/cars to push until the end but it doesn’t do that

I just thought that this would give the small teams a mini-chance of a championship point at the end of the race.
The probability is perhaps very small that a team that is not in the top ten will get the fastest lap at the end. So you can also stop the rule.
