These are two different types.
I had a sneaky feeling they were but just had to check. 
White asparagus grows underground and is pricked as soon as its head breaks through the soil. Green asparagus, on the other hand, thrives in the sun - this is how it forms the chlorophyll that gives the vegetables their rich green colour.
