Congratulations to Paraguay for managing to dismantle Germany’s game. Despite a few good chances, Germany never looked in control at any point.
Far too many misplaced passes in build-up play, and a defensive mindset that no defense can sustain.
Yes, there was an absolutely scandalous refereeing error; that 2–1 goal would likely have meant advancing to the round of 16.
But honestly, I’m glad it’s over now against Paraguay. And, ironically, it spares us the humiliation of facing France. Because the French would have made our defense look like a bunch of kids playing soccer yesterday.
I see it quite differently: compared to the previous two games, Germany actually played better again yesterday and were definitely the more committed team, which is also backed up by the match stats. A win against Paraguay would’ve been deserved!
I agree that France would very likely beat Germany, but I don’t think it would be a disaster. I think it would have been a hard-fought game that would have ended in a dignified loss for Germany.
It’s just my opinion. I just wanted to add a bit of balance to what you wrote.![]()
In the end, it’s over now anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.
He would have ice deport the team ![]()

Okay, maybe my somewhat harsher analysis is partly due to my disappointment over the elimination.
Still, a German national team—with its so-called top players—should be capable of developing the right tactics against Paraguay to win the game in regulation time. Because I thought Germany played exactly the same kind of soccer against Ecuador—without success.
But you’re right, it’s over. And the lesson is that the world of soccer has become increasingly level. There are now only two, three, or four teams that are stronger than the rest.
And the so-called “small nations” no longer exist at the World Cup. These teams are fighting to make their dreams come true as if there were no tomorrow.
And if you, as an established soccer nation, can’t get your fundamentals right on the field that day, then it just isn’t enough.
I agree that there are hardly any teams left that are truly “hopeless” these days. As we’ve seen, many underdogs are actually very well organised tactically (e.g. solid in defence, compact).
That said, in international football competitions, there are still so-called “smaller nations”, such as Haiti, Qatar, Curaçao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Panama - just to name a few.
But I fully agree with the rest of your point.
As for the German national team, I’m curious to see what the next few days will bring — whether Nagelsmann stays on or gets sacked early.
What a moment, for the first time (third try) Norway won a match in the knock-out stage in the World Cup.

Match saving save from keeper Ørjan Håskjold Nyland!

I can’t add much other than the German team is far ( very far ) from what (historically ) used to be. Still transitioning, i guess…
I also think the team still needs time to improve its play.
I mean, they’re all good individual players, but the team chemistry isn’t quite there yet.
And the team isn’t exactly packed with superstars, either. So it has to come from the team as a whole.
But now Klopp is coming…! Liverpool’s savior—that’s bound to work out.

The fans in this café in Paraguay were kept in suspense longer than necessary during the decisive penalty in the match against Germany.
and this was the matchwinner.. what a big boy!
